Prom and Formal Dresses for Teenagers
Budget and where the money goes, fit and alterations, comfort and resale
Prom dressing has become expensive, and most of the cost is avoidable without the evening being any less enjoyable.
Set the budget first
Agree a total covering the dress, shoes, alterations, hair, makeup and transport, because those add up to more than the dress. Deciding the number in advance removes most of the pressure later.
Hiring, buying second-hand and resale platforms all put better dresses within a smaller budget, and several charities run prom dress schemes.
Fit and alterations
Buy for the shoulders and the bust, since those cannot be altered affordably, and have the length and waist adjusted. Allow two to three weeks for alterations and take the shoes to the fitting.
Order early, since dresses sell out and a rushed replacement costs more.
Comfort over a long evening
Five or six hours of standing, dancing, sitting and getting home. Check she can sit down, raise her arms and walk in the shoes, and pack flats for later.
Strapless dresses need proper internal support or they are adjusted all night.
Skin and hair
Patch test anything new — fake tan, lashes, makeup — at least 48 hours ahead, and do not book a first-time facial the week before.
Afterwards
Resell it, pass it to a prom scheme or keep it for another occasion. A dress worn once and stored for a decade helps nobody.
Shoes and accessories
Block heels are considerably more stable on grass, gravel and a dance floor than stilettos, and flats are entirely acceptable. Break them in indoors over a week.
One considered accessory beats several, and a small bag with a strap leaves hands free.
Getting there
Agree the plan in advance — how they get there, how they get home, who is driving and what time. Share a location, and make clear they can call at any hour without questions.
Photographs
Take some before leaving in daylight, since venue lighting rarely flatters and everyone is tired by the end.
Budget alternatives
Prom dress exchanges, charity schemes, borrowing from family and buying second-hand all produce excellent results. Several charities collect and redistribute dresses specifically so nobody misses the evening over money.
Hiring gives access to better quality for a fraction of the price.
Hair and makeup
A trial run costs money and prevents the morning-of disaster, particularly for anything elaborate. Doing it yourself with a practice run the week before works perfectly well.
Patch test lashes, tan and any new product at least 48 hours ahead.
Order the dress at least two months ahead to leave time for alterations.
The main thing
Nobody remembers an outfit as clearly as the person wearing it fears.
