Solar Lights That Actually Work
Why cheap ones fail, panel and battery, placement and winter performance
Solar lights are bought expecting disappointment, and the ones that work are distinguished by a few specifications rather than by luck.
Why cheap ones fail
A tiny panel, a small low-quality battery and no weatherproofing. The battery degrades within a season, the panel clouds, and water gets into the housing.
Look for a replaceable battery, since a sealed unit has a fixed and usually short life.
Panel size matters most
The panel must generate enough over a short winter day to fill the battery. A larger separate panel that can be positioned in the sun while the light sits in shade is far more effective than an all-in-one unit.
Monocrystalline panels outperform amorphous ones at the same size.
Battery capacity and type
Check the capacity in milliamp hours and the chemistry. Lithium iron phosphate handles cold better than older nickel chemistries and lasts longer.
Placement
Direct sun for as much of the day as possible, and away from any other light source, since streetlights and security lights confuse the dusk sensor and stop lights turning on.
Clean the panel periodically, since dust, pollen and bird mess reduce charging considerably.
Winter
Expect substantially reduced performance from November to February in northern latitudes. Short days, low sun and cold batteries combine, and this is normal rather than a fault.
A mains or low-voltage system is the honest answer where lighting genuinely matters, such as steps and paths.
Light quality
Warm white suits gardens and attracts fewer insects. Aim lights downwards rather than outwards, which reduces glare and light pollution.
Security lighting
For security, a mains or wired low-voltage light with a motion sensor is far more reliable than solar. Aim it at the approach rather than outwards, and avoid pointing it into neighbours' windows.
Permanent outdoor wiring should be installed by a registered electrician in suitable cable.
Wildlife
Artificial light at night affects insects, bats and hedgehogs. Warm colour temperatures, lower levels and lights that switch off rather than burn all night all reduce the impact.
Festive and decorative lighting
Check outdoor sets carry the correct weatherproof rating and are connected to a socket protected by an RCD. Do not connect more sets together than the manufacturer permits.
Switch decorative lighting off at night and when leaving the house, and check cables each year for damage before putting them up.
Placement in a garden
Light what you want to look at rather than flooding the whole space. A few well-placed lights on a path, a tree and a seating area do more than a dozen scattered ones.
Storage
Switch decorative lights off and bring them in over winter to preserve the batteries.
