Everyday Shoes You Can Walk In
What makes a shoe comfortable, heels and flats, fit and looking after them
A shoe worn daily is judged on the fourth hour rather than the first, and the features that decide that are structural.
What makes a shoe comfortable
A sole that bends at the ball of the foot rather than in the middle, a firm heel counter that holds the heel, and a fastening that stops the foot sliding forward. Cushioning matters less than those three.
A completely flat, unstructured shoe is as tiring over a day as a high heel for many people, since neither supports the arch.
Heels
A block heel of two to four centimetres is comfortable for most people and considerably more stable than a stiletto. Height shifts weight onto the forefoot, which is why higher heels hurt at the toes rather than the heel.
Check the shoe is not so narrow at the toe that it squeezes, which is what causes bunion pain and neuromas over years.
Fit
Try them at the end of the day with the socks or tights you will wear, walking rather than standing. Both feet, since one is almost always larger, and fit to the larger one.
Width matters as much as length, and leather stretches slightly across and never in length.
Materials
Leather moulds to the foot and breathes. Synthetic uppers do not stretch, so they must fit from the start.
Rotating and care
Two pairs alternated last considerably longer than one worn daily, since each dries fully. Clean and protect them before first wear.
Insoles
A supportive insole transforms a flat shoe, provided there is depth for it.
Breaking them in
Short periods indoors first, and never a new pair for a long day out. Leather moulds over weeks; synthetic does not, so anything that pinches in the shop will still pinch in a month.
Deal with a rubbing point immediately with a plaster rather than walking on and hoping.
Resoling
Shoes with a stitched sole can be resoled several times, which makes a higher price cheaper over a decade. Glued shoes generally cannot.
Feet change
Size changes with age and after pregnancy, and most people have not measured in years. Measure both feet standing, at the end of the day, before buying rather than assuming your size.
Width fittings exist and solve more problems than going up a size.
Buying online
Work from the insole length in centimetres where a retailer gives it, try them on carpet so they stay returnable, and check who pays return postage.
Keep the receipt and try shoes indoors for an hour before wearing them out.
When to get help
Persistent foot pain warrants a podiatrist rather than another pair.
