Clip-In Hair Extensions

How they work, matching colour and weight, protecting your own hair and care

Clip-ins are the least damaging way to add length and the damage they do cause comes from weight and from wearing them constantly.

How they work

Wefts of hair on small pressure clips, attached to sections of your own hair and removed at the end of the day. Nothing is glued, sewn or bonded, which is why they are the reversible option.

Human hair can be heat styled and coloured darker; synthetic cannot take heat and will melt under a straightener.

Weight is the thing to get right

Sets are sold by weight in grams. Too much weight for your own hair density pulls at the roots and causes traction damage over time, particularly at the temples.

Fine hair needs a lighter set and fewer wefts. If clips feel tight or your scalp aches, the set is too heavy or too tightly clipped.

Matching colour

Match in daylight against the mid-lengths and ends rather than the roots, since that is where the extensions sit. A slightly lighter shade blends better than a darker one.

Human hair can be toned or darkened by a professional; lifting it lighter rarely goes well.

Protecting your own hair

Vary where the clips sit rather than the same spots daily, take them out before sleeping and before exercise, and never leave them in for days.

Buying them

Remy human hair has the cuticles aligned in one direction, which is why it tangles less and lasts longer than non-Remy. Check the weight, the length and the number of wefts against your own hair rather than buying the biggest set.

Order a colour ring or a sample where one is offered, since photographs misrepresent shade badly.

Wearing them out

Clip them in on second-day hair, which grips better than freshly washed hair. Backcomb the roots lightly at each clip point for security.

Styling them

Use a heat protectant and the lowest effective temperature, since extensions have no natural oils and cannot repair themselves. Curl them off the head where you can, on a mannequin or laid flat.

Avoid heavy oils and silicone build-up at the wefts, which loosens the bonds and matts the top.

When they wear out

Tangling that will not brush out, dryness that conditioner does not fix, and shedding at the weft. A good set lasts months of regular wear rather than years.

Keep the clips closed when stored so they do not catch on the hair.

Care

Wash rarely, with sulphate-free shampoo, brushing from the ends upwards with a loop brush. Extensions have no natural oils, so condition them and use heat protectant.

Store flat or hanging rather than bundled in a drawer.
