Writing a brief, judging a seller, revisions and rights to the work
Freelance marketplaces work well when the task is clearly defined and badly when it is not. The brief does most of the work.
Write a proper brief
State what you want, what it is for, the format and size of the deliverable, the deadline, and what success looks like. Include examples of things you like and things you do not.
A vague brief produces revisions, and revisions are where both sides lose money and patience.
Judging a seller
Look at the portfolio rather than the rating, since ratings cluster near the top. Check whether the samples look like what you need and whether the style is consistent.
Read the middling reviews, which are the informative ones, and look for comments on communication and deadlines rather than only on quality.
Message before ordering
Send the brief and ask whether they can do it, how long it will take and what they need from you. Response quality before ordering predicts the experience afterwards.
Revisions and scope
Check how many revisions are included and what counts as one. Changing your mind about direction is a new job rather than a revision, and expecting otherwise causes most disputes.
Rights to the work
Establish in writing whether you receive full commercial rights, exclusive use, and the source files. This matters enormously for logos and anything you will build a business on.
Check the seller has the right to any stock images, fonts or music used, since you inherit the problem if they do not.
Briefing creative work
Provide brand colours, fonts and any existing assets up front, along with where the work will be used and at what sizes. A logo for a website and a logo for a vehicle are different jobs.
Ask for editable source files as part of the delivery rather than afterwards.
Realistic expectations
Very cheap work is cheap because it is fast and templated. For anything your business depends on, budget accordingly and treat it as a professional engagement.
Working with someone repeatedly
Finding one good freelancer and returning to them is worth far more than shopping around each time, since they learn your business and need less briefing.
Pay promptly, brief clearly and give specific feedback, which is how you become a client people prioritise.
Confidentiality
Be careful what client or customer material you share, since passing it to a third party may breach an agreement or data protection obligations.
Paying
Keep payment and communication within the platform, since moving off it removes the dispute process entirely.
For anything substantial, a written contract is worth more than a marketplace order.
