Everyday Trainers and Walking Comfort
What casual trainers are built for, fit and support, standing all day and care
Casual trainers are designed to look a certain way, and how they perform over a day on your feet varies enormously between styles.
Casual and performance are different
Retro and court-style trainers have flat, firm soles with little cushioning and minimal arch support, because they were designed for indoor sport decades ago. They are comfortable for a few hours and hard work all day.
Running and walking shoes have cushioned midsoles, a heel-to-toe drop and structured uppers. For a day of walking or standing, that difference matters considerably.
Fit
Try them at the end of the day with the socks you will wear, allowing around a thumb's width at the toe. Both feet, since they differ, and fit to the larger one.
Width matters as much as length. Heel slipping with a good forefoot fit means the shoe shape is wrong rather than the size.
Standing all day
Cushioning, a supportive footbed and a shoe that holds the foot rather than letting it slide. An aftermarket insole can transform a flat trainer, provided there is room for it.
Rotating between two pairs lets each dry and recover, which is more comfortable and makes both last longer.
Care
Brush dirt off before it dries, clean with a soft brush and mild soap, and never use a washing machine, which separates glued soles and distorts the shape.
Dry away from radiators, stuffed with paper, and use a protector spray on suede and canvas before first wear.
Buying sensibly
Trainers are heavily discounted at the end of a colourway's run, and last season's model performs identically. Check the returns policy and try them on carpet so they stay returnable.
Buy a second pair of anything that fits particularly well, since models are revised without notice.
Sizing between brands
Trainer sizing varies considerably between manufacturers and between models from the same one. Measure your foot in centimetres and compare against the stated insole length, which is more reliable than a size number.
Feet are largest at the end of the day, and most people have one foot bigger than the other.
Insoles
Replacing a flat factory insole with a supportive one transforms a casual trainer for standing and walking, provided there is depth for it.
Cleaning white trainers
Clean them before they look dirty, since ingrained grime is far harder to remove. A soft brush, warm water and a little washing-up liquid handles most of it, and a magic eraser cleans rubber midsoles.
Never machine wash or tumble dry, which separates glued soles and yellows midsoles.
When to replace
When the midsole has compressed or the tread is smooth, which happens long before the upper looks worn. New aches with no change in activity frequently mean the shoes are finished.
