Electric Screwdrivers and Small Repairs
Where they help, torque and bits, opening devices and what to leave alone
A small electric screwdriver is one of the more useful tools in a flat, because most household jobs involve screws rather than drilling.
Where they help
Flat-pack furniture, electronics repairs, appliance panels, cupboard hinges and anything with dozens of identical screws. The advantage is consistency and wrist comfort rather than power.
They are not drills. Anything into masonry or requiring real force needs a proper cordless drill.
Torque control
The most important feature. Too much torque strips screw heads and chews the threads in particleboard, which cannot be repaired properly.
Start low, drive until seated, and finish by hand for the last quarter turn on anything delicate.
Bits
A good bit set matters more than the driver. Cheap steel rounds off and then damages the screw, and the correct size and type — Phillips, Pozidriv, Torx, hex — is what prevents that.
Precision sets with small Torx, pentalobe and tri-point bits cover phones, laptops and games consoles.
Opening devices
Most repairs fail at the plastic clips rather than the screws. Plastic prying tools, suction cups and a heat source for adhesive are what make the difference.
Keep screws organised as you remove them, since lengths differ and a long screw in the wrong hole damages a board.
Batteries and charging
Most of these use small lithium cells charged over USB-C. Charge on a hard surface while you are present, store at around half charge if unused for months, and stop using anything that swells or gets hot.
Never bin a lithium battery, since damaged cells start fires in collection vehicles.
Buying
Check the torque range, whether it has a manual mode for final tightening, and the quality of the bits, which is where cheap sets fail.
Flat-pack and furniture
Leave fixings slightly loose until the piece is square, then tighten in stages, and finish the last turn by hand. Overtightening into particleboard strips the thread, which cannot be repaired properly.
Anchor tall units to the wall with the bracket supplied.
Storage
Keep the driver, bits and a small torch together in one box where you can reach it, since tools that are hard to find are bought twice.
Keep a magnetic tray for screws, which prevents most of the losses.
Photograph each stage of a disassembly, which makes reassembly considerably easier.
What to leave alone
Anything mains powered unless you are competent and it is unplugged, anything with a capacitor such as a microwave, and swollen lithium batteries, which must not be punctured or bent.
Right to repair rules now require spare parts for several product categories.
