Sending Large or Awkward Items
Pallets and van deliveries, packing properly, insurance and customs
Anything too large for a parcel courier moves through a different system, and the cost and the risk both change with it.
Parcel, pallet or van
Parcel networks handle items up to around thirty kilograms and a limited size, and they sort mechanically, which is why fragile items suffer. Pallet networks move heavy goods on forklifts and handle them far less.
A dedicated van or a man-and-van service carries an item without transfers, which suits furniture, artwork and anything that cannot be palletised.
Packing for a pallet
Stack within the footprint so nothing overhangs, keep the load stable and low, strap it to the pallet and wrap it thoroughly. An overhanging item will be damaged.
Label the pallet on several sides, since labels get torn off.
Furniture and fragile goods
Dismantle what you can, wrap edges and corners separately, and protect any glass with a proper crate rather than cardboard. Photograph everything before it leaves.
Insurance
Standard liability is limited and frequently by weight rather than value, and many carriers exclude fragile items, electronics and anything poorly packed. Read what is excluded before assuming you are covered.
Declare the value and buy additional cover for anything that matters, and keep the packing photographs as evidence.
International and customs
Shipments outside a customs union need a declaration, a commodity code and a value, and duty may apply even on personal effects. An incorrect declaration causes delays and penalties.
Check restricted goods lists, which cover batteries, aerosols, liquids and a great deal else.
Comparing quotes
Compare the total including collection, delivery, any tail lift, fuel surcharges and insurance rather than the headline price. Volumetric weight frequently determines the cost rather than actual weight.
Check the transit time honestly, since pallet networks quote working days and weekends are not counted.
Tracking and proof
Photograph the item and the packing before collection, keep the consignment note, and inspect on delivery before signing, noting any damage on the paperwork.
Moving house
For a whole household, a removal firm with insurance is a different service from a courier and is usually better value than several van bookings. Get three written quotes including packing materials.
Label boxes by room and by contents, and keep documents, medication and valuables with you rather than in the van.
Collection and delivery days
Confirm whether the collection is a timed slot or a whole day, who needs to be present, and what happens if nobody is there. A missed collection usually incurs a charge.
Have the item packed and accessible before the window opens rather than during it.
Access
Confirm whether a tail lift is needed, whether a large lorry can reach the address, and who will be there to receive it.
