Wardrobes and Bedroom Storage
Measuring and internal layout, fitted and freestanding, hanging heights and safety
A wardrobe is bought for its appearance and judged on whether your clothes fit inside it, which depends on the internal layout rather than the outside.
Work out what you are storing
Measure the length of hanging you currently use, and count what is folded. Long hanging for coats and dresses needs around 150 centimetres of height; short hanging for shirts and jackets needs around 100.
A wardrobe that is all long hanging wastes the space underneath, which is why double-hanging rails and drawers hold far more in the same footprint.
Fitted and freestanding
Fitted uses awkward corners and sloping ceilings and stays with the house. Freestanding moves with you and needs clearance around it.
Check ceiling height and whether a tall unit can be tilted upright in the room, which is a common problem with flat-pack wardrobes.
Doors
Hinged doors need swing space in front. Sliding doors need none and lose some internal width to the track, and you can only see half the wardrobe at a time.
Safety
Anchor every tall unit to the wall with the bracket supplied, using fixings suited to the wall type. Toppling furniture causes serious injuries every year, usually when a drawer is opened and climbed.
Inside
Add a rail light or a battery strip, since dark wardrobes hide clothes. Cedar or lavender in a sealed box for wool, and store everything clean, since moths are attracted to skin and food residue.
Making the most of what you have
Slimline hangers hold considerably more in the same rail, and storing out-of-season clothes elsewhere halves the problem. Vacuum bags work for bedding and bulky coats.
A wardrobe you can see into is one you use — organise by type rather than by colour if you struggle to find things.
Under the bed
Drawer divans and ottoman bases hold a great deal. Check the gas struts are rated for your mattress and keep children away from the mechanism.
Bedside and dressing tables
A bedside surface needs room for a lamp, a glass and a book, and a drawer for everything else. Check the height against the mattress top, since a table well below it is awkward to reach.
Measure the walking space around the bed before adding anything.
Mattresses and bases
A mattress behaves differently on a solid platform, a sprung divan and slats. Check the maximum slat spacing the manufacturer allows, since wide gaps cause sagging and void most warranties.
Rotate as the manufacturer specifies, and note that many modern mattresses are single sided.
Buying
Check the route in, the assembled dimensions and whether the back panel is included.
