Vacuum Cleaners, Filters and Dust

Types compared, filtration and allergies, maintenance and what actually matters

Vacuum cleaners are sold on suction figures and judged at home on whether they are convenient enough to use often, which is a different thing.

The types

Cordless stick vacuums are used far more often because they are quick to grab, and they have limited runtime and smaller bins. Corded uprights and cylinders have unlimited runtime and more power for deep carpet.

Many households end up with a cordless for daily use and something larger for occasional deep cleaning.

Bagged and bagless

Bagged machines trap dust in the bag and are emptied without a cloud, which suits allergy sufferers. Bagless machines cost nothing to run and release dust when emptied.

Empty a bagless bin outside or into a bag rather than over a kitchen bin.

Filtration

For allergies, the whole machine needs to be sealed, not just fitted with a good filter. Air escaping around a poorly sealed body bypasses the filter entirely, which is why the certification wording matters.

Wash or replace filters on schedule, since a blocked filter is the commonest cause of lost suction.

The brush bar matters more than suction

Agitation is what lifts dust from carpet. A motorised brush bar with anti-tangle features does more than a headline air watts figure, particularly with pets or long hair.

Maintenance

Cut hair from the brush roll, clear the hose, empty before it is full and check the seals. Most vacuums declared broken are blocked.

Technique

Slow passes rather than fast ones, overlapping, and several passes over high-traffic areas. Vacuuming quickly is why carpets stay dusty despite being done twice a week.

Use the crevice tool along skirtings and under furniture edges, which is where dust accumulates.

Allergies and dust

Wash bedding at sixty degrees periodically, which is what kills dust mites, and ventilate rooms daily. Vacuuming is part of the picture rather than the whole of it.

A vacuum with a poorly sealed body can put fine dust back into the air, which matters most for anyone with asthma.

Cordless batteries

These degrade within a few years. Check a replacement battery is available and what it costs before buying, since that determines the real life of the machine.

Choosing between types

Consider the floor surfaces you actually have, the stairs, whether you have pets and how much storage there is. A machine that lives in a cupboard two rooms away gets used less whatever its specification.

Check the weight if you carry it upstairs, and the noise level if you clean while others are at home.

Buying

Check the weight, the noise level, and that filters, belts and batteries are available as spares, which now applies under repairability rules.
