Personalised and Photo Gifts
What works, image quality and resolution, proofing and lead times
Personalised gifts land well when the personalisation means something and badly when a name has simply been printed onto an object.
What works
A photograph of a specific moment, an inside reference, a date that matters, or something the recipient will actually use daily. The best ones make the recipient feel known rather than catered for.
A name on a generic object is not personalisation. Ask what the person would keep.
Image quality
Resolution is what separates a good print from a blurred one. A photograph that looks fine on a phone may be far too small for a large canvas, and stretching it does not add detail.
Send the original file rather than one that has been through a messaging app, which compresses heavily. Check the supplier's minimum pixel dimensions for the size you have chosen.
Dark images print darker than they appear on a bright screen, so choose well-lit photographs.
Proofing
Read every word of the proof, including dates and spellings, since personalised items cannot be returned once made. Have somebody else read it too, because you will read what you meant to write.
Lead times
Personalised and printed items take considerably longer than stock goods, and December is worse. Order weeks ahead rather than days.
Rights
Do not send photographs you do not own the rights to, and be careful with images of other people's children.
What to give instead
Consumables, experiences and anything that upgrades something used daily are remembered longer than objects. A personalised item works best when it is also useful.
For someone who genuinely wants nothing, a charitable donation in their name is a real option.
Packaging
Check whether the item arrives gift-wrapped and whether packaging is recyclable, since glitter and foil are not.
Choosing the product
Mugs, prints, calendars, cushions and aprons are used; novelty objects are looked at once. Something the person will handle daily keeps the photograph in their life rather than in a drawer.
Check the print area and how the image will be cropped, since square photographs and long mugs rarely suit each other.
Multiple recipients
Family calendars and photo books work well as a gift to several people at once, and ordering the same item several times is usually cheaper per unit.
Order a small sample item first if you are printing something important.
Practical
Check what happens if the print is faulty rather than simply not what you hoped, since those are handled differently.
A handwritten card alongside is usually the part that gets kept.
