Ceramic and Gravity Water Filters
How ceramic candles work, what they remove, maintenance and travel
Ceramic filters work differently from carbon cartridges, and understanding the mechanism explains what they will and will not handle.
How a ceramic candle works
Water passes through a porous ceramic shell with pore sizes measured in fractions of a micron, which physically blocks particles and bacteria. Many candles contain a carbon core inside for taste and chlorine.
Because the filtration is physical, the outer surface can be scrubbed clean and reused, which is why these last far longer than disposable cartridges.
What they remove
Sediment, bacteria and cysts such as giardia and cryptosporidium, and with a carbon core, chlorine taste and some organic compounds. Silver-impregnated ceramics also inhibit growth within the filter.
Most do not remove viruses, dissolved salts, nitrates or fluoride unless a specific additional media is fitted. Check the manufacturer's tested performance for the contaminant you care about.
Gravity systems
Two chambers with candles between them, needing no plumbing or power. That suits rented homes, boats, caravans and anywhere with an unreliable supply, and it is slow.
Maintenance is the safety point
Scrub the ceramic with a stiff brush under running water when flow slows, and replace the candle when it has worn below the stated diameter. A filter left too long becomes a bacterial surface.
Sterilise the system if it has stood unused, and never let filtered water sit for days in a warm room.
Travel and emergencies
For travel where viral contamination is a risk, a filter alone is not enough — you need a purifier or boiling. Check the specification against where you are actually going.
Flow and capacity
Gravity systems are slow by nature, so a larger upper chamber or two candles rather than one makes the difference between usable and irritating. Fill it in the evening for the next day.
Under-sink ceramic systems run at mains pressure and are far faster, and need a plumber or reasonable confidence to fit.
Taste
If the complaint is only chlorine taste, a simple carbon jug or chilling tap water in a covered jug solves it for very little. Keep filtered water refrigerated and drink it within a day or two.
Knowing your water
Suppliers publish annual water quality reports for each area, free and detailed. Read yours before buying anything, since it tells you the hardness, the treatment used and any local issue.
That report frequently makes clear that the only thing actually worth addressing is the taste.
Mains water
In most developed countries the tap water is safe, and filtration is about taste or a specific local concern rather than about safety.
