Cleansing Properly
What a cleanser should do, double cleansing, over-cleansing and technique
Cleansing is the step most people either rush or overdo, and both produce the same complaint of skin that feels tight and reactive.
What a cleanser should do
Remove sunscreen, makeup, sebum and pollution without stripping the barrier. Skin should feel comfortable afterwards rather than squeaky, since squeaky means the barrier lipids have gone with the dirt.
That tight feeling is not cleanliness. It is a signal the cleanser is too harsh for you.
Double cleansing
An oil or balm first to dissolve sunscreen and makeup, then a gentle water-based cleanser. It genuinely helps if you wear heavy sunscreen or makeup, and it is unnecessary for bare skin.
In the morning, most people need water or a very gentle cleanser only.
Over-cleansing
Washing several times a day, hot water, and foaming cleansers with harsh surfactants all damage the barrier. Oily skin that is stripped produces more oil rather than less.
Twice a day is plenty, and once for very dry or sensitive skin.
Technique
Lukewarm water, thirty to sixty seconds of gentle massage with fingertips, and pat dry rather than rubbing. Do not use a flannel or a brush daily, since that is mechanical exfoliation.
Choosing one
Cream and milk cleansers suit dry and sensitive skin. Gel cleansers suit oily and combination skin. Micellar water is convenient and should be rinsed rather than left on.
Fragrance-free is the useful label for reactive skin.
Makeup wipes
They drag skin, leave residue and generate waste. A balm and a flannel does the job better.
Building a routine
A gentle cleanser, one active, a moisturiser and daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is a complete routine. Adding more products is usually what causes the irritation people then try to treat.
Introduce one new product every four weeks so you know what caused a reaction.
Patch testing
Apply anything new to the inner forearm daily for five to seven days rather than once, since allergic reactions are frequently delayed.
Fragrance, including essential oils, is among the leading causes of contact allergy in cosmetics.
Tools
Wash flannels after every use at sixty degrees and replace sponges regularly, since both hold bacteria against skin.
Sunscreen and cleansing
A cleanser only needs to be thorough enough to remove what you actually wore. If you use a high-protection sunscreen daily, an oil or balm first genuinely helps; if you wore nothing, it does not.
Never skip sunscreen because removing it feels like effort, since it does more than everything else in a routine combined.
Afterwards
Moisturise onto slightly damp skin, and sunscreen every morning.
