Packing a Capsule for a Trip

Building the set, the colour rule, fabrics that travel and packing itself

Overpacking comes from planning outfits rather than planning combinations, and a small set that all works together covers far more days.

The colour rule

Two neutrals and one accent. Every top should work with every bottom, which is the test — if a piece only goes with one other thing, it is taking space for one outfit.

One pair of shoes worn, one packed, and both in a neutral that works with everything.

A workable set for a week

Two bottoms, four tops, one layer, one jacket or coat appropriate to the weather, and one thing for an evening. That produces enough combinations for a week and fits in a cabin bag.

Add a swimsuit, underwear and socks, and accept doing a small wash rather than packing for every day.

Fabrics that travel

Merino for tops, since it resists odour and can be worn several times. Knits and jersey recover from creasing; linen and heavy cotton do not. Anything requiring ironing is a poor traveller.

Packing

Roll soft items, fold structured ones, and use the shoes for socks and chargers. Packing cubes make a case searchable rather than lighter.

Keep medication, documents, a change of underwear and chargers in hand luggage.

The honest test

Lay everything out, then remove a third. Almost nobody wears everything they pack, and shops exist at the destination.

Laundry away from home

A small bottle of travel wash, a sink and a towel to roll clothes in gets most things dry overnight. Merino and synthetics dry fastest; heavy cotton does not.

A few hangers and a door hook make a hotel room considerably more workable.

One bag or two

Cabin only removes waiting, lost luggage and baggage fees, and forces the discipline that makes packing work. Check the airline's exact dimensions, which differ.

Weather and layering

Check the forecast rather than the season, since a city in spring can be twenty degrees or five. A packable waterproof and one warm layer covers both ends without adding bulk.

Wear the heaviest items on the plane.

Laundry at home afterwards

Wash and air everything promptly, since a case left packed for a week is where mildew starts.

Shoes and bags

One comfortable pair worn and one packed, both neutral. A small crossbody bag for days out and a packable tote for shopping covers almost everything.

Keep valuables in a bag that closes and sits in front of you in crowds.

Documents and security

Photograph your passport, tickets and insurance and store copies somewhere reachable without your phone. Keep a card and some cash separate from your wallet.

Tell your bank you are travelling.

Weight

Weigh the case at home rather than at the airport.
