Diamond Painting and Craft Kits
How the kits work, setting up, technique and finishing a piece
Diamond painting is a repetitive, absorbing craft requiring no drawing ability, which is much of its appeal. The technique is simple and a few things make it far less frustrating.
How it works
A printed adhesive canvas marked with symbols, and small resin facets placed onto matching squares with a pen tool and wax. Round drills are quicker and easier; square drills sit flush and give a more complete look.
Partial kits cover part of a printed image; full drill covers the whole canvas and takes considerably longer.
Setting up
Good light from the side, a flat surface and a tray for each colour. A light pad underneath makes the symbols readable and is the accessory people most often add later.
Work in sections, peeling back only the protective film you are using so the rest stays clean.
Technique
Pour a small amount into the tray and shake gently so the drills sit face up. Press each one straight down rather than sliding it, and go over completed sections with a rolling pin or a book to bed them in.
If the canvas loses tack, it is usually dust. Keep hands clean and cover the work between sessions.
Comfort
This is close, repetitive work. Take a break every half hour, look at something distant to rest the eyes, and sit at a proper height rather than hunched over a coffee table.
Finishing
Seal with a suitable sealant if you want to frame it, or stretch it over a frame. Standard canvas sizes make framing far cheaper.
Storing drills and kits
Transfer leftover drills into labelled containers with the colour code, since the bags split and mixing colours is unrecoverable. Keep spares, which every kit includes.
Store unfinished canvases flat rather than rolled, which lifts drills at the creases.
Other craft kits
Cross stitch, paint by numbers and model kits occupy attention similarly. Choose by how long you want to spend rather than by the picture alone.
Why people find it absorbing
Repetitive, low-stakes and visibly progressing, which is a combination that occupies the mind without demanding much of it. Many people use it in the way others use knitting.
It also suits doing alongside a podcast or a programme, which is a large part of the appeal.
As a gift
Choose the size honestly, since a very large full-drill canvas represents many weeks of work and can feel like an obligation rather than a present.
Children and pets
Drills are small and are a choking hazard. Work somewhere they can be contained and vacuumed up afterwards.
