Choosing and Caring for Towels
GSM and fibre, why new towels do not absorb, washing and how long they last
Towels are bought on feel in a shop and judged on absorbency at home, and the two are frequently the opposite of each other.
GSM
Grams per square metre describes weight and density. Around 400 to 500 is a light quick-drying towel suited to gyms and warm climates. 600 to 700 is a substantial bath towel. Above 800 is luxurious and takes a long time to dry.
Heavier is not automatically better, particularly in a small bathroom with poor ventilation where a dense towel stays damp.
Fibre and construction
Long-staple cotton produces stronger, smoother yarn that pills less. Zero-twist yarn feels exceptionally soft and absorbs quickly and is less durable than twisted loops.
Check the hem and the selvedge, which is where towels fail first.
New towels do not absorb
Manufacturers apply softeners and finishes that repel water. Wash new towels two or three times before judging them, and add a cup of white vinegar to the first wash to strip the finish.
Never use fabric softener
It coats the fibres with a waxy layer and permanently reduces absorbency. This is the single most common reason towels stop working, and it builds up over time.
White vinegar in the rinse softens without coating.
Washing
Warm to hot, not overloaded, with the correct detergent dose. Too much detergent leaves residue that stiffens towels; too little leaves them grubby.
Dry promptly and fully. A towel left damp in a machine or bundled on a floor smells within hours.
Between uses
Hang spread out on a rail rather than folded on a hook, so air reaches both faces. Ventilate the bathroom, since a room that never dries defeats everything.
Building a set
Two bath towels and two hand towels per regular user means one is always available while the other dries or is washed. Keeping a separate guest set saves hunting for clean ones.
Darker colours hide staining from skincare products, which bleach towels permanently.
Bath mats
These stay damp longest and should be hung to dry rather than left on the floor. Wash them more often than towels, and check any rubber backing is machine safe.
Ventilation matters most
Textiles that never fully dry develop odour whatever you wash them with. An extract fan run during and after showering, and a window opened, is the underlying fix rather than a stronger detergent.
A heated towel rail is convenient and should not be the only drying route, since it dries the outside while the folds stay damp.
Replacing
Most towels last three to five years. Old ones make good cleaning cloths.
