Airport Parking: Comparing the Options Safely
On-site, park and ride and meet and greet, checking the operator, and insurance
Airport parking is expensive and the prices vary enormously, and one of the cheaper options carries a risk the others do not.
The three types
On-site parking is closest and most expensive. Park and ride is off-site with a shuttle bus, and is the usual best value. Meet and greet means handing your keys over at the terminal to be parked for you.
Book in advance in every case, since drive-up rates at an airport are the highest available.
Meet and greet needs checking
Your car is driven away by someone you have just met and stored somewhere you have not seen. Reputable operators do this properly, and there have been well-documented cases of cars left in fields, driven for personal use and returned damaged.
Check the operator holds an airport-approved or recognised parking accreditation, look for a stated storage address, and read recent reviews rather than the aggregate score.
Protect yourself either way
Photograph the car inside and out with a timestamp before handing over the keys, including the mileage and the fuel level. Do the same on collection.
Remove valuables and documents, and leave only the ignition key rather than a full keyring with house keys attached.
Insurance
Ask what cover the operator holds and what it covers — many exclude damage while the vehicle is being driven. Check whether your own policy covers the car being driven by a third party.
Timing
Allow generous time for shuttle buses at both ends, which run to their own schedule and are slowest at peak departure hours.
Alternatives worth comparing
A taxi both ways, public transport, or a drop-off by someone else frequently costs less than a week of parking, particularly at larger airports. Some airports charge for drop-off, so check that too.
Hotels near airports offering parking packages can undercut parking alone for an early flight.
Booking
Book well ahead, check whether the booking is amendable if your flight changes, and keep the confirmation accessible offline.
On return
Check the car before driving away, including the mileage, fuel and any new marks, and report anything immediately rather than after leaving. Claims raised later are considerably harder.
Take a photograph of the car in the collection area, which establishes its condition at handover.
Long stays
For trips over a couple of weeks, ask how the car is stored and whether the battery is likely to be flat on return, which is common on modern cars.
Comparing fairly
Count the transfer time and any cancellation flexibility alongside the price. A slightly more expensive option that allows amendment is worth it when flights change.
