Dressing for a Wedding as a Guest
Reading a dress code, what to avoid, comfort and hiring
Wedding guest dressing is a set of conventions rather than rules, and most of the anxiety comes from unclear invitations.
Reading the dress code
Black tie means a dinner jacket or a long or elegant midi dress. Lounge suit or formal means a suit and a smart dress or separates. Cocktail sits slightly below. Anything described as relaxed or garden party means smart without a jacket.
If the invitation says nothing, ask the couple or someone in the wedding party rather than guessing.
What to avoid
White, ivory and anything close to it unless the couple has said otherwise. Overwhelming the wedding party, and wearing the bridesmaid colour if you know it.
In some cultures and faiths black or red carries particular meaning, and covered shoulders or heads are expected in certain venues. Ask if you are unsure.
Comfort matters more than the photograph
Weddings run twelve hours and involve standing on grass, gravel and dance floors. Heels you cannot walk in are removed by six and the outfit is judged on how you look all day.
Block heels or flats, a wrap or jacket for the evening, and something you can eat a three-course meal in.
Hiring and resale
Occasion wear is worn once, which makes hire and resale platforms genuinely sensible. Hiring gives access to better quality for a fraction of the price.
Alterations
Hem length and a taken-in waist are inexpensive and transform an off-the-peg dress. Allow two weeks, and take the shoes you will wear to the fitting, since the hem depends on them.
Shoulders cannot be altered affordably, so buy for those.
The rest of the outfit
One considered accessory beats several. A wrap for the evening, a small bag and comfortable shoes cover everything a long day needs.
Buying or hiring
Work out the cost per wear honestly. A dress worn to one wedding costs the whole price; one that works for several occasions is different. Hire and resale platforms both make better quality affordable.
Order early enough to try, return and reorder, since occasion wear sizing is unpredictable.
Storage
Hang on a padded hanger in a breathable cover, away from light, and deal with marks before storing rather than after.
Repeat wearing
Changing the accessories, shoes and hair is what makes the same dress work for a second and third occasion. Nobody remembers an outfit as clearly as the person wearing it fears.
Photograph what you wore to which event if that worries you.
Practical
Check the weather and the venue — outdoor ceremonies, marquees and churches are cold.
A small bag, plasters and a spare pair of tights.
