Collecting Scale Model Cars

Scales explained, resin and diecast, display and buying sensibly

Model cars are collected at several scales, and the scale determines the detail, the price and how much shelf you need.

The scales

1:43 is the traditional collector scale — small, affordable and the widest range of subjects. 1:18 is large enough for opening parts and fine detail, and takes considerable space. 1:12 is display-piece territory.

1:64 is the size most people know from childhood and now includes serious collector models.

Diecast and resin

Diecast is metal, heavier, usually with opening doors and bonnets, and robust. Resin is cast plastic, allows sharper detail and more obscure subjects, and is fragile and usually sealed shut.

Resin models are frequently limited runs, which is much of their appeal and their price.

What determines value

Limited edition numbers, the accuracy of the casting, licensing, and above all the box. A model without its original packaging is worth considerably less.

Keep the box, the certificate and any plinth, and record what you paid.

Display and dust

Direct sunlight fades paint and yellows clear parts and tyres permanently. A glass cabinet away from a window solves dust and light together, and a soft brush or low-pressure air cleans without scratching.

Rubber tyres can mark shelves over years, so use a plinth or a clear pad.

Buying sensibly

Collect a theme — one marque, one era, one racing series — rather than everything, which is what keeps it manageable and makes the collection interesting.

Buying

Check the manufacturer and the specific tooling rather than only the subject, since the same car is produced by several makers at very different levels of accuracy. Reviews and photographs of the actual model tell you more than the box art.

Pre-orders on limited runs sell out and then appear at a premium, which is worth knowing if you collect a particular series.

Selling on

Photograph honestly including any flaws, keep the original packaging and state the edition number. Collections sell more easily as themed groups than one at a time.

Displaying a collection

Group by marque, era or series rather than scattering, which makes a shelf read as a collection rather than an accumulation. Leave space between models so each is visible.

Secure shelving properly, particularly where children or pets could pull it over.

Getting started

Pick one scale and stay with it, since mixing scales on a shelf looks wrong and doubles the storage problem. Buy a few models you genuinely like before committing to a series.

Set a budget and a shelf limit before the collection sets its own.

Children and models

Collector models are not toys and carry small parts. Keep them out of reach.
