Buying Books and Supporting Bookshops
How the model works, ordering from a local shop, formats and building a reading habit
Where you buy a book determines whether any of the money reaches a bookshop, and there are more options than most readers realise.
How the model works
Platforms supporting independent bookshops share revenue with a shop you nominate, or with a pool distributed among member shops. The books are usually fulfilled by a wholesaler rather than the shop itself.
It is not the same as buying in the shop, where the margin is larger, and it is considerably better for the shop than the alternative.
Ordering through a local shop
Most independents will order almost any in-print book, frequently for next-day collection and at the cover price. Very few customers ask, and it is the single most useful thing you can do for a local bookshop.
Formats
Hardbacks come first and cost most. Paperbacks typically follow around a year later. E-books are instant and are licensed rather than owned, which means they can be removed from your account.
Audiobooks count as reading for comprehension purposes, and several platforms also share revenue with bookshops.
Libraries
Free, and borrowing generates a payment to the author in many countries. Libraries also lend e-books and audiobooks, and will order titles they do not hold.
Second-hand
Cheap and keeps books in circulation, and it returns nothing to the author or publisher. A reasonable position is buying new for authors you want to keep writing and second-hand for everything else.
Book groups and recommendations
Bookshop staff recommendations are consistently better than algorithms, because a person who has read both books can tell you why you might like one. Ask a member of staff rather than only browsing the tables.
Local reading groups and library events cost nothing at all and are how most people find things outside their usual range.
Buying as a gift
Include a gift receipt, since duplicate copies are common with popular titles. A token from an independent lets the recipient choose and still supports the shop.
Building a reading habit
A fixed time each day beats an intention to read more, and ten minutes before sleep is where most readers actually get through books. Keep the book visible rather than in a drawer.
Audiobooks fill commutes and household chores, and there is no hierarchy between the formats.
Reading more
Abandon books you are not enjoying, since finishing out of obligation is what stops people reading. Keep one going at a time and read at a fixed moment in the day.
Reading for pleasure is consistently associated with better wellbeing, and what you read matters far less than whether you actually enjoy it.
