Mini Trampolines and Rebounding
What rebounding does, bungee and spring, pelvic floor, and using one safely
Rebounding is low-impact cardiovascular exercise on a small trampoline, and it suits people for whom running and jumping on hard ground do not.
What it actually does
Raises heart rate, works the legs and core, and challenges balance. The mat absorbs a large part of the landing force, which reduces joint impact compared with running.
It is genuinely aerobic exercise rather than a gentle activity, and it is more tiring than it looks.
Bungee and spring
Bungee-suspended mats are quieter, softer and gentler on joints. Steel springs give a firmer, more responsive bounce and are noisier.
Check the weight limit, the frame stability and whether a handlebar is included, which matters for anyone unsure of their balance.
Pelvic floor
Bouncing loads the pelvic floor repeatedly, and leaking during exercise is common and is not something to push through. It is treatable.
Anyone postnatal, postmenopausal or with symptoms should see a pelvic health physiotherapist before starting, and build up gradually. This applies to running and jumping generally.
Using it safely
Ceiling height including your bounce, a clear area around it, and a flat floor. Bare feet or grippy socks rather than trainers, which reduce feel and can catch.
Start with small bounces without leaving the mat, which is already effective, and build up. Never let more than one person on at a time.
Building the habit
Keep it out rather than under a bed, since equipment stored away is not used.
Noise and neighbours
Bounce transmits through floors more than the noise of the frame. A mat helps, and this matters a great deal in a flat or above a bedroom.
Check the floor can take the concentrated load, particularly upstairs or in a converted loft.
Maintenance
Check the mat, bungees or springs and the frame fixings regularly, since these wear and a failure mid-bounce causes injury. Replace worn bungees as a complete set rather than one at a time.
Building up
Start with ten minutes and add gradually, since the calves and ankles take time to adapt, and doing too much too soon is how people end up sore enough to give up.
Balance improves quickly, which is one of the genuine benefits here, particularly for older adults.
Alternatives
Brisk walking costs nothing at all and is the form of exercise people sustain longest. Strength training twice a week has good evidence for almost every outcome people want from exercise.
Before starting
Speak to a doctor first if you have a heart condition, joint problems, are pregnant, or have been inactive for a long time.
