Makeup for Sensitive and Reactive Skin

What causes reactions, ingredients to watch, patch testing and hygiene

Most makeup reactions are irritation or contact allergy rather than a general intolerance, and identifying the specific cause is what makes the problem solvable.

Irritation and allergy

Irritation happens on first contact and is dose dependent — stinging, redness, burning. Allergic contact dermatitis develops after repeated exposure and can appear days later, which is why people miss the culprit.

A reaction appearing two days after a new product is still that product.

The common culprits

Fragrance, including essential oils and natural extracts, is among the leading causes of contact allergy in cosmetics. Preservatives such as methylisothiazolinone, some dyes, and lanolin are others.

Natural does not mean gentle. Plant extracts cause a substantial share of cosmetic allergy.

Fragrance-free rather than unscented

Unscented can mean a masking fragrance has been added to cover a base smell. Fragrance-free is the label that means what you want.

Patch testing

Apply a new product to the inner forearm daily for five to seven days rather than once, since delayed reactions are common. Introduce one product at a time so you know what caused a problem.

Around the eyes

The skin is thinnest there and reactions are most common. Replace mascara every three months, never share eye products, and discard anything used during an infection.

Persistent redness, swelling or itching of the eyelids needs a doctor rather than a different mascara.

Hygiene

Wash brushes weekly in warm soapy water and dry them flat. Clean sponges after every use and replace them regularly. Check the open-jar symbol for how long a product lasts once opened.

Minimal routines

For reactive skin, fewer products means fewer variables. A tinted moisturiser or a light base, a cream blush and a mascara covers most days and gives your skin a rest.

Give any new product four weeks before adding another.

Removing makeup

Remove it properly every night with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water rather than a wipe, which drags and leaves residue. Never sleep in eye makeup.

Reading an ingredient list

Ingredients are listed in descending order down to one percent, so anything near the end is present in small amounts. Fragrance may appear as parfum, and essential oils are listed by their own names.

Keep a note of products that caused a reaction, including the batch, which is what makes a pattern findable.

Mineral makeup

Mineral formulations contain fewer ingredients and frequently no fragrance or common preservatives, which is why they suit reactive skin. They are not automatically hypoallergenic, since minerals cause reactions too.

Loose mineral powders should be applied carefully to avoid inhaling them.

When to see a doctor

Persistent or spreading reactions warrant referral for patch testing, which identifies the specific allergen properly.
