Divan Bases and Bed Frames

What each offers, storage options, mattress compatibility and delivery

The base under a mattress affects how it feels, how long it lasts and how much storage you have, and the choice is more consequential than it appears.

Divans and frames

A divan is an upholstered box base, usually on castors, that supports the mattress across its whole surface. Sprung divans add give; platform-top divans are firmer.

A bed frame uses slats and a headboard, shows the floor underneath and generally looks lighter in a room. Solid slats are firmer; sprung slats add flex and soften a firm mattress.

Slat spacing matters

Gaps of more than about seven centimetres cause a mattress to sag between slats and void most mattress warranties. Check the spacing before buying, particularly with foam mattresses.

A slatted base changes the feel of a mattress noticeably compared with a platform divan, so try to compare like with like.

Storage

Drawer divans are the simplest and need floor clearance beside the bed to open. Ottoman bases lift the whole mattress on a gas mechanism and hold considerably more.

Check the gas struts are rated for your mattress weight, since a heavy mattress on weak struts is hard to lift and harder to lower safely. Keep children away from the mechanism.

Headboards

Check the fixing type, since divan headboards bolt to struts and frame headboards are integrated. Measure the height against a window sill or a radiator behind the bed.

Delivery

Divans arrive in one or two large pieces that do not bend. Measure the route in including stair turns, and ask whether a split base is available for awkward houses.

Mattress and base together

The base changes how a mattress feels, so a mattress tried on a sprung divan in a showroom will feel firmer on a solid platform at home. Ask what it was displayed on.

Keep the mattress label and the receipt, since a warranty claim usually depends on both and on the base being suitable.

Living with it

Rotate the mattress as the manufacturer specifies and check whether it is single sided, since many modern mattresses should not be flipped.

Bed height

Total height with the mattress determines how easy the bed is to get in and out of, which matters more with age or reduced mobility. Around knee height with feet flat on the floor is the usual guide.

Measure the existing bed before ordering, since divans on castors sit noticeably higher than low frames.

Check the base fits through the room door as well as the front door.

Fire labels

Upholstered bases must carry fire safety labels, which charities require to accept them later.
