Adjustable Beds: Who They Suit

What they help with, sizing and mattresses, getting assessed and buying sensibly

Adjustable beds are marketed broadly and suit a specific set of needs. Working out whether yours is among them prevents an expensive disappointment.

Where they genuinely help

Getting in and out of bed with reduced mobility, which is frequently the main reason. Raising the head for reflux, breathing difficulties or after certain surgery. Raising the legs for swelling and circulation.

For back pain generally the evidence is mixed, and comfort is individual rather than predictable.

Get advice for a medical reason

If the bed is for a diagnosed condition, ask an occupational therapist or your doctor first. Equipment is sometimes funded or loaned through health and social care services, and VAT relief applies in the UK for equipment bought for a disability.

An assessment also identifies whether something simpler — a bed raiser, a grab rail, a wedge pillow — would do the job.

Mattresses

The mattress must be designed to flex. Ordinary pocket-sprung mattresses do not, and forcing one damages both. Foam, latex and specific adjustable-compatible sprung mattresses work.

Check the mattress is included and whether it can be replaced separately later.

Sizing for two people

A dual system with two independently adjusting halves suits couples with different needs. Check whether they link together and whether bedding for the size is easy to buy.

Practical checks

Weight capacity, noise of the motor, whether there is a battery backup for power cuts, and what happens if the motor fails. Ask about the warranty on the mechanism specifically.

Measure the room, the route in and the ceiling for anything overhead.

Delivery and installation

Confirm delivery includes assembly in the room and removal of the old bed, and measure the route in including stair turns. Adjustable bases are heavy and arrive in sections.

Check where the plug socket is, since the bed needs mains power at the head end.

Living with one

Fitted sheets need to be deep enough to stay on through the range of movement, and bedding designed for adjustable beds exists. Keep the mechanism clear of cables and pets.

Alternatives worth trying first

A wedge pillow, adjustable bed raisers under the head end, or a simple grab handle solve some of the same problems for a fraction of the cost. Try those before committing to a bed.

For reflux specifically, raising the whole head end rather than propping with pillows is what actually helps.

Sleeping position

Speak to a doctor about persistent breathlessness lying flat, or reflux needing regular medication, since both have underlying causes worth treating.

Trying one

Lie on it for a proper length of time, and beware pressure selling, which is common in this sector.
