Home Battery Storage
What a battery does, sizing one, the economics and installation
A home battery stores electricity to use later, and whether that saves money depends on your tariff more than on the hardware.
What it does
It charges when electricity is cheap or when solar is generating more than the house is using, and discharges in the evening peak. Most also provide backup during a cut, if they are specified for it.
It does not generate anything. It shifts when you draw power, which is why a time-of-use tariff is what makes the arithmetic work.
Sizing it
Work from your evening consumption rather than your annual total. A battery larger than what you use between the cheap windows sits idle and never pays for itself.
Check the usable capacity rather than the nominal figure, since a portion is reserved to protect the cells, and check the continuous power output against what you actually run at once.
The economics
The saving is the difference between the cheap import rate and the peak rate, multiplied by the energy cycled daily. Work that out against the installed cost and the warranted cycle life before deciding.
Export payments change the sums where solar is involved, and both tariffs and rates change over a battery's life.
Installation
This is fixed electrical work requiring a qualified installer, notification to the network operator and consideration of where the unit is sited for fire safety and ventilation.
Tell your home insurer.
Backup during an outage
Not every battery provides backup, and those that do need a changeover device and a defined circuit. Ask specifically whether the system keeps working in a power cut and what it will run.
Without that, a battery simply stops with everything else.
Monitoring
An app showing import, export, generation and battery state is what tells you whether the system is behaving as sold. Check it in the first weeks rather than assuming.
Tariffs change
Review the tariff annually, since the saving depends entirely on the gap between cheap and peak rates.
Solar and batteries together
Storage raises self-consumption of your own generation from roughly a third to well over half for many households, which is where most of the value sits. Model it against your own usage rather than a general figure.
Insulation and reducing demand come first, since they cost less per unit saved.
Ask for references from recent local installations and how support is handled.
Chemistry and safety
Lithium iron phosphate is the common choice for its cycle life and thermal stability. Check the warranty covers a stated number of cycles and a retained capacity.
