DNA and Relationship Testing

Legal and peace-of-mind tests, consent, accuracy and being ready for the result

DNA testing is straightforward technically and complicated everywhere else, which is why the type of test matters as much as the result.

A legal test follows a documented chain of custody — identity checked, samples taken by an independent sampler, everything recorded — and is accepted by courts and agencies. A peace-of-mind test is taken at home and is not.

If there is any chance the result will be used for child maintenance, immigration, inheritance or a court, order the legal version from the start. Repeating it later costs more.

In the UK, testing someone's DNA without their knowledge or consent is an offence under the Human Tissue Act. For a child under sixteen, a person with parental responsibility must consent.

Secret testing of a partner or a child is not a grey area.

Accuracy

A well-run paternity test is extremely accurate, typically reported as greater than 99.99 percent probability for an inclusion and effectively conclusive for an exclusion. Accreditation is what makes that meaningful, so check the laboratory's accreditation.

Sibling, grandparent and avuncular tests are far less definitive than paternity tests, and the reports are probabilities rather than answers.

Be ready for the result

These results change families permanently. Think about who will be told, in what order, and what support is available — counselling services and family mediation exist for exactly this.

Choosing a provider

Check the laboratory's accreditation, whether the test is legal or peace of mind, the turnaround, and exactly what the report will say. Ask what happens if a sample fails and whether a retest is included.

For a legal test, the sampler must be independent, so a home kit cannot be upgraded afterwards.

Drug and alcohol testing

Hair strand and blood testing are used in family court and in workplaces, and the interpretation matters as much as the result. A report should be read alongside professional advice rather than acted on alone.

What a result does not tell you

A DNA test answers a biological question and nothing about who a parent is in every other sense. Families work through that in their own time, and rushing the conversation rarely helps.

Where children are involved, consider whether and how to tell them, and take advice from a family professional rather than deciding in the moment.

Cost

Legal tests cost more because of the sampling and documentation. Compare what is included — the number of participants, the report, and whether a retest is covered.
