How to Shop AliExpress Without Getting Burned
The marketplace is genuinely useful — if you know which categories to trust
AliExpress has a reputation problem that is roughly half deserved. It is an enormous marketplace connecting buyers directly to Chinese manufacturers and resellers, which means the same catalogue contains both excellent value and outright junk. The difference between a good experience and a bad one is almost entirely about knowing which categories reward you.
What it is genuinely good for
Components, tools, cables, phone accessories, craft supplies, replacement parts and anything where the product is simple and the brand is irrelevant. A USB-C cable is a USB-C cable. Buying one for two dollars instead of fifteen is not a compromise, it is arbitrage on the retail markup.
It is also strong for sourcing. If you sell anything physical, AliExpress is where you find the supplier behind the product before it reaches a Western storefront at four times the price. Order a single sample before committing to a bulk purchase — always.
What to avoid
Anything electrical that plugs into a wall, anything worn on the body for safety, and anything branded. Counterfeit goods are common, and a fake charger is a genuine fire risk rather than a minor disappointment. Memory cards are another well-known trap, frequently relabelled to show a capacity the hardware does not have.
How to read a listing
Ignore the star rating and read the actual reviews, filtering for ones with customer photographs. Those photographs are the single most reliable signal on the entire platform, because they show the item that actually shipped rather than the render the seller uploaded. A listing with three hundred orders and twenty photo reviews tells you more than a five-star rating with none.
Check the seller's store rating and how long it has been open. Check the shipping origin — some items ship from local warehouses in days rather than weeks. And read the size chart rather than the size label, since clothing sizing runs small by Western standards almost without exception.
Time your order to the sale events
The platform runs genuine, predictable discount events rather than the permanent fake sale common elsewhere in e-commerce. The November 11th sale and the spring anniversary event are the two largest, and prices during them are meaningfully lower rather than cosmetically so. Adding items to a wishlist weeks ahead lets you see whether a discount is real, because you will have watched the original price sit unchanged for a month.
Shipping and protection
Standard shipping runs two to five weeks. Paid express options exist and are often worth it on anything over about thirty dollars. Buyer protection covers items that never arrive or arrive materially different from the description, but opening a dispute takes patience, so keep the packaging and photograph anything that arrives damaged.
Used properly, it is one of the most useful shopping tools available. Used carelessly, it is a slow-motion way to accumulate things that do not work. The difference is entirely in the categories you choose.
