A gaming laptop and a desktop at the same price are not equivalent machines, and the differences show up under sustained load.

Where the money goes

A desktop puts more of the budget into the graphics card and cooling. A laptop pays for miniaturisation, a screen, a battery and a keyboard, so performance per pound is lower.

Laptop graphics chips run at varying power limits, so the same model name performs very differently between machines. Check the stated graphics power rather than the name alone.

Thermals and noise

A laptop under load is hot and loud, and thin models throttle after a few minutes. Reviews that measure sustained performance and fan noise tell you far more than a specification sheet.

Use a stand for airflow, keep vents clear, and never game with a laptop on a bed or a sofa.

Upgrading

Desktops take a new graphics card, more memory and more storage over years. Most gaming laptops allow memory and storage changes only, and many now solder the memory.

That determines how long the machine stays useful rather than how fast it is today.

When a laptop is right

If you genuinely move it — between home and elsewhere, or in a shared space with no room for a desk. Otherwise a desktop plus a cheap laptop frequently costs the same and works better.

Battery

Gaming on battery is slow and drains fast. Plan on being near a socket.

Monitors and peripherals

An external monitor, a mechanical or low-profile keyboard and a mouse that fits your hand improve a gaming setup more than a small specification increase. A laptop screen at desk height needs a stand.

Noise, heat and placement

Desktops can be built quiet; laptops cannot under load. In a bedroom or a shared room that matters more than most people expect, and headphones are not a full answer.

Keep any machine away from carpet and radiators and clean the dust filters or vents a couple of times a year.

Building or buying

A pre-built desktop is simpler and carries a warranty on the whole machine; building one costs a little less and gives exact control over components. Neither is obviously right.
