Choosing a Laptop for Study
What actually matters, battery and weight, software requirements and budget
A student laptop is carried daily and used for years, which changes the priorities from the ones on a specification sheet.
What actually matters
Battery life, weight and the keyboard, in that order. A machine that lasts a day of lectures without a charger and does not hurt to carry gets used; a faster one that needs a socket does not.
8GB of memory is a working minimum and 16GB is comfortable. A solid state drive is essential rather than optional.
Check the course requirements
Some courses specify software that only runs on particular systems — engineering, architecture, statistics and music production in particular. Check before buying rather than after enrolling.
Many universities provide software free, and some run schemes with discounted hardware.
Screen and keyboard
A full HD IPS screen at 13 to 14 inches is the usual balance between readability and portability. Type on the keyboard before buying if you can, since a poor one ruins a machine used for essays.
Durability and repair
A sturdy chassis, a spill-resistant keyboard and a model with available parts. Ex-business machines are built for this and are excellent second-hand.
Budget
Mid-range machines last longer than the cheapest ones and cost far less than the most expensive. Add a sleeve, a backup drive and insurance to the budget.
Accessories worth having
A sleeve, a mouse, headphones with a decent microphone and a small stand that raises the screen to eye level. Those four cost little and change how usable a laptop is for long sessions.
A backup drive or a cloud subscription from the first week.
Security
Turn on full disk encryption, use a password manager, and know how to wipe the device remotely, since laptops are the most commonly stolen device on a campus.
Buying sensibly
Student discount schemes, refurbished business machines and previous-generation models all reduce the price substantially. Check the return period and buy before term rather than in the first week when stock runs out.
Insurance matters, since laptops are lost, dropped and stolen more than any other device.
Software and storage
Check what the institution provides free, since office software, antivirus and specialist packages are frequently included. Cloud storage through the institution is usually generous and ends when you graduate.
Move anything you want to keep to your own storage before that happens.
Carrying it
A padded sleeve inside a rucksack with two straps used together, and the laptop compartment against the back. Never leave it in a car, in a library seat or visible in a window.
Record the serial number somewhere other than the laptop.
Backups
Cloud sync plus one other copy, from the first day.
