Gaming Laptops: What Actually Matters
Thermals and power limits, screens, upgradeability and the trade-offs
Gaming laptops are compared on the graphics chip in the name, and two machines with the same chip can perform very differently.
Power limit matters as much as the chip
Manufacturers configure the same graphics chip to draw different amounts of power, stated in watts as a total graphics power figure. A higher limit means more performance and more heat.
That figure is frequently buried in the specifications and is the single most useful number for comparing two laptops with the same graphics name.
Cooling decides sustained performance
A thin chassis cannot dissipate the heat, so it runs fast for a few minutes and then throttles. Reviews measuring sustained frame rates and surface temperatures tell you far more than a specification sheet.
Check the fan noise under load, since gaming laptops are loud and you will hear it for hours.
The screen
Refresh rate is only useful if the hardware can drive it at your settings. A 144Hz panel at 1440p is a sensible pairing; a 240Hz panel that the machine feeds at 70 frames is marketing.
Check brightness, colour coverage and whether there is a mux switch or advanced optimus, which lets the graphics chip drive the display directly and is worth real performance.
Upgradeability
Memory and storage are frequently upgradeable; the graphics chip never is. Check how many slots are free before buying the base configuration.
Battery and portability
Gaming performance requires mains power, and battery life under load is short. These are portable desktops rather than laptops in the usual sense.
Settings that matter more than hardware
Upscaling and frame generation add considerable performance at a small visual cost, and turning shadows and volumetric effects down does more for frame rate than anything else in a menu.
Cap the frame rate to the screen's refresh rate, which reduces heat and noise for no visible loss.
Peripherals
An external mouse and a monitor transform a gaming laptop at a desk, and the internal keyboard and trackpad stop mattering. Budget for both.
Battery health
Heat degrades lithium cells fastest, and a gaming laptop runs hot by design. Where the manufacturer offers a charge limit, using it for desk sessions extends battery life considerably.
Do not game with the machine on a bed or a sofa, which blocks the intakes underneath.
Check what the warranty covers and whether accidental damage can be added, since these machines travel.
Buy the configuration you need now, since the graphics chip can never be changed later.
Keeping it healthy
Clean the vents every few months, use it on a hard surface, and raise the rear for airflow.
