Laptops for School and University
What students actually need, durability and battery, software and budget
Student laptops are bought on specification and fail on battery, weight and whether they survive a bag, which are rarely on the comparison table.
Check the course requirements first
Architecture, engineering, design and some sciences require specific software that may need a particular operating system, a discrete graphics chip or a minimum specification.
Most other courses need a browser, a word processor and video calls, which almost any current machine handles. Ask the department rather than guessing.
Battery and weight matter most
A machine carried between lectures all day should be under about 1.5 kilograms and last a full day without a charger. Quoted battery figures come from light video tests, so expect half to two thirds in real use.
A laptop that charges over USB-C can share a phone charger, which is one less thing to lose.
Durability
Look for a firm hinge, minimal chassis flex and ideally a spill-resistant keyboard. A protective sleeve costs very little and prevents most damage.
Specifications
16GB of memory and a 512GB solid state drive, with a full HD IPS screen at 300 nits or more. Processor generation matters less than those three for ordinary work.
Software and discounts
Universities frequently provide office software, cloud storage and antivirus free, and student discounts on hardware are substantial. Check before paying for anything.
Back up from day one
Cloud sync plus one other copy. A dissertation lost to a failed drive is a genuinely common disaster.
Accessories that matter
An external mouse, a padded sleeve and a cheap USB hub cover most of what a student needs. A stand raising the screen to eye level prevents the neck problems that come from working on a laptop all day.
Headphones with a decent microphone matter more than people expect for group calls and lectures.
Security
Enable full disk encryption and a strong password from day one, since a laptop left in a library is a common loss. Record the serial number and consider insurance under a parent's contents policy.
Buying second-hand
Check battery health, that the machine is not locked to a previous owner's account, and how many years of security updates remain.
Backing up
Cloud sync plus one other copy, set up before the first assignment rather than after. Losing a dissertation to a failed drive is genuinely common and entirely preventable.
Check whether the university provides cloud storage, which is usually generous and free.
Check what ports the machine has against the projectors and displays you will actually plug into.
Budget
Refurbished business machines frequently offer better keyboards and repairability than new budget models at the same price.
