Pay As You Go and Low-Cost Mobile
When pay as you go wins, credit expiry, coverage and keeping your number
Pay as you go suits more people than use it, because the alternative is paying monthly for an allowance most people never reach.
When it wins
Low or irregular use, a second phone, a child's phone, someone mostly on wi-fi, or anyone who wants no contract at all. If you use a couple of gigabytes and a few calls a month, a monthly bundle is usually money wasted.
Check your phone's settings for actual monthly usage before deciding. Most people use far less than they buy.
Credit expiry
The detail that catches people out. Some providers expire unused credit after a period of inactivity, so a phone kept for emergencies can quietly lose its balance and eventually its number.
Check the inactivity period and make a small call or top-up occasionally to keep the account live.
Coverage matters more than price
Every smaller provider resells capacity from one of a few underlying networks. Find out which one, and check coverage at home, at work and where you travel rather than trusting national maps.
Data and add-ons
Bundles bought on top of pay as you go frequently give better value than per-megabyte rates. Check what happens when a bundle runs out, since out-of-bundle rates can be very high.
Set a spending cap if the provider offers one, and disable premium rate and third-party charging.
Keeping your number
Request a transfer code from your current provider rather than cancelling first, which loses the number. Check whether the phone is network locked before switching.
Phones for children
Pay as you go with a cap is the usual approach, since it makes spending visible and impossible to overrun. Basic phones with calls and texts only are a legitimate choice.
Agree rules about charging overnight out of the bedroom, which does more for sleep than any setting.
Using wi-fi
Wi-fi calling and messaging over the internet removes most of the need for a large data bundle. Enable wi-fi calling if your phone and provider support it, which also helps in poor signal areas.
Switching and comparing
Compare the cost across a full year rather than the monthly headline, and check whether prices rise mid-contract. Out-of-contract customers on old monthly plans are usually the ones overpaying most.
Keep the old SIM safe until the number transfer has completed.
Older phones
A phone still receiving security updates is safe to keep using, and keeping one an extra year or two matters more environmentally than recycling does.
Roaming
Check what is included abroad and turn data roaming off before you land if you are unsure.
