Custom LED Neon Signs
LED and glass neon, designing one that reads, installation and power
Almost everything sold as a neon sign is now LED rope on an acrylic backing rather than glass tubing, and the difference matters for cost, safety and how it looks.
LED and glass
Traditional neon is gas in hand-bent glass tubes running at high voltage. It has a distinctive glow, is fragile, expensive and runs warm.
LED neon is a flexible strip in a silicone sleeve, running at low voltage. It is cheaper, robust, dimmable, cooler and lighter, and it lacks the exact depth of glass.
For a home or a small business, LED is the practical choice by a wide margin.
Designing one that reads
Script fonts look best and become illegible at small sizes, because thin connecting strokes disappear. Fewer words in a heavier font reads from across a room.
Ask for the actual dimensions and mock it up on the wall in paper before ordering. People consistently order these too small.
Colour
Colour is fixed in the tube, so decide carefully. Warm white and pastels suit interiors; saturated colours read as signage. Check how it looks unlit, since the silicone colour shows in daylight.
Power and safety
LED signs run from a low-voltage transformer and must use the supplied one. Keep the transformer accessible and ventilated rather than sealed into a wall cavity.
For outdoor use, check the IP rating and have any permanent outdoor supply installed by a qualified electrician.
Mounting
Use the fixings supplied and fix into something solid. Plan where the cable will run before drilling, since a trailing lead undoes the effect.
Where they work
Behind a bar, in a studio, above a desk or as a shop sign. Against a plain dark wall they read best, and against a busy patterned wall they disappear.
Consider how bright it is in a bedroom, since these are considerably brighter at night than the product photographs suggest.
Running cost and life
LED signs use very little power and are commonly rated for tens of thousands of hours. Check whether the strip can be replaced or whether a failure means a new sign.
Ordering custom text
Check spelling, spacing and any punctuation on the proof, and ask for a mock-up at scale on a photograph of your wall. Custom signs are not returnable.
Ask what happens if it arrives damaged, since glass and acrylic backing both crack in transit and a claim depends on photographs taken on opening.
Practical
Check every letter of custom text before confirming, since these are not returnable. Allow production time on top of delivery.
