PDRN, NAD and the Newer Skincare Ingredients
What they claim, where the evidence sits, and how to judge a new ingredient
Skincare produces new hero ingredients constantly, and a useful habit is knowing how to assess one rather than researching each in turn.
PDRN
Polydeoxyribonucleotide, usually derived from salmon DNA. It has been used in injectable form in aesthetic medicine with some supporting research for healing and skin quality.
Whether it does anything applied topically is a separate question, since the molecule is large and penetration is the whole issue. Evidence for topical use is limited.
NAD and its precursors
NAD is a coenzyme central to cellular energy, and its decline with age is well established. Oral precursors raise blood levels; what a topical application achieves in skin is not established.
Borrowing an ingredient's reputation from a different route of administration is the pattern to watch for.
How to judge a new ingredient
Ask whether the studies were in humans or in cell culture, whether the ingredient was applied topically or injected, at what concentration, and who funded the work.
Check the concentration in the product against the concentration studied. Ingredients appearing near the end of a list are present in token amounts.
The ingredients with the strongest evidence
Sunscreen by a wide margin, then retinoids, vitamin C, niacinamide and azelaic acid. Decades of research sit behind those, and a routine built on them outperforms one chasing new arrivals.
Introducing anything new
One product every four weeks, patch tested on the inner forearm for several days first, and eight to twelve weeks before judging it.
Routine order
Thinnest to thickest — cleanser, watery treatment, serum, moisturiser, then sunscreen in the morning with nothing over it. Applying to slightly damp skin helps the hydrating layers do their job.
Do not stack several exfoliating actives together on the same night, which is the usual route to a damaged barrier.
Cost per use
Divide the price by the number of applications rather than comparing bottle prices, and check the open-jar symbol showing how many months a product lasts once opened.
Sunscreen first
Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen outperforms every serum in this category by a wide margin, and it is the one product with the largest effect on how skin ages.
Apply considerably more than feels necessary, roughly a third of a teaspoon for the face, and reapply it every couple of hours in strong sun.
Consistency
Results come from months of using a few things consistently rather than from rotating through new products every few weeks. Change one thing at a time so you know what worked.
Imported products
Check batch codes and dates, since imported stock can be old, and note that permitted ingredients differ between markets.
