Buying Prescription Glasses Online: A Practical Checklist

The three numbers you need, and what the high street markup actually covers

Prescription glasses carry one of the largest markups in retail. The frames and lenses themselves are not expensive to produce; the price reflects high-street premises, dispensing staff and the fact that most people buy without comparing. Ordering online removes most of that, provided you have the right information before you start.

What you need before ordering

Your prescription, which your optician must give you after an eye test — you are entitled to it and do not have to buy from them. It lists sphere, cylinder and axis for each eye, plus an addition value if you need reading correction.

Your pupillary distance, the measurement between the centres of your pupils in millimetres. This is not always printed on a prescription but any optician will measure it in under a minute. An incorrect PD is the single most common reason online glasses feel wrong, causing eye strain and headaches even when the lens power is right.

Your frame measurements, if you already own glasses that fit well. Three numbers are printed inside one arm: lens width, bridge width and temple length. Matching those is the most reliable way to buy a frame online that fits.

Lens options worth paying for

Anti-reflective coating is the one genuine upgrade. It removes glare that makes your eyes invisible in photographs and reduces halos around headlights at night. Thinner high-index lenses are worth it for stronger prescriptions, where standard lenses become noticeably thick and heavy at the edges.

Blue light filtering is widely sold and weakly supported by evidence. Photochromic lenses that darken outdoors are genuinely useful if you spend time outside and do not want separate sunglasses, though they work poorly behind a windscreen.

Frame material and fit

Acetate frames are thicker, hold colour well and can be heat-adjusted by an optician if they sit wrong. Metal frames are lighter and easier to bend into shape but less forgiving of rough handling.

Nose pads are worth attention. Adjustable pads on metal frames let you fine-tune how the glasses sit; moulded acetate bridges do not, which makes bridge width measurement far more important on that style.

Check before you order

Confirm the prescription is in date, since most expire after two years and an out-of-date prescription defeats the purpose. Confirm the returns policy on prescription lenses specifically, as it frequently differs from the policy on frames.

Buy a second pair

At these prices a spare is not extravagant, it is basic risk management. If glasses are how you see, one pair means a single accident leaves you unable to drive or work.

Order a backup in a plain frame with the same prescription. It costs a fraction of the first pair and you will eventually be very glad it exists.
