Underwear, Fabrics and Comfort
Why the gusset is cotton, fit and irritation, washing, and when to see a doctor
Underwear is worn against skin all day and the fabric choice has a practical health dimension that rarely gets mentioned in the marketing.
Breathability
Synthetic fabrics trap heat and moisture against skin, and a warm damp environment is where irritation and fungal problems thrive. That is why almost all underwear, however decorative, has a cotton gusset.
For everyday wear, cotton or a cotton-rich blend is the comfortable default. Lace and satin for occasions is entirely fine, and it is the all-day, every-day choice that matters.
Fit and irritation
Elastic that digs in, seams in the wrong place and anything too tight cause chafing and folliculitis. Sizing up is usually the answer rather than a different fabric.
For exercise, moisture-wicking fabric that moves sweat away, changed promptly afterwards. Sitting around in damp kit is the commonest cause of irritation.
Washing
Wash at forty to sixty with a non-biological detergent if you are sensitive, rinse thoroughly and skip fabric softener, which coats fibres and leaves residue against skin.
Replace elastic that no longer recovers, since underwear is worn out long before it looks it.
What not to do
Avoid scented products, douches and harsh soaps, which disrupt the natural balance rather than improving it. Plain water externally is what is recommended.
Buying
Check the composition rather than the description, since a lace front with a synthetic lining is not a cotton product. Buy a single pair of anything new before committing to a multipack.
Sizes vary enormously between brands, so work from the stated measurements.
Replacing
Underwear is worn out long before it looks it. Elastic that no longer recovers is the signal, and a rough replacement cycle of six to twelve months for everyday pairs is realistic.
Exercise and heat
Change out of damp kit promptly, since sitting around in it is the commonest cause of irritation and thrush. Seamless styles reduce chafing on long runs.
In hot weather, looser and more breathable beats tight and synthetic.
Storage
Fold rather than cramming, and keep moulded shapes flat so they do not crease permanently.
Fabrics and sensitivity
Dyes and finishes cause reactions in some people, which is why washing new underwear before wearing it is worth doing. Undyed or pale cotton is the safest option for anyone who reacts.
Fragranced detergents and softeners leave residue against skin all day.
Keep a few pairs for exercise and a few for everyday rather than mixing them.
When to see a doctor
Persistent itching, unusual discharge, soreness that does not settle or recurrent infections all warrant seeing a GP or pharmacist rather than changing product again.
