Home Security Cameras: Setup, Privacy and the Law

Placement, what the law requires, storage options and account security

Home cameras are cheap and effective and carry obligations that most buyers never read. Two of them are legal rather than technical.

You may have data protection duties

In the UK and EU, a camera capturing footage beyond your own property boundary — a pavement, a road, a neighbour's garden — brings the household exemption to an end and data protection law applies to you.

That means being able to justify the recording, providing information about it, and responding to a request from someone captured. Angle cameras to cover your own property and mask areas you cannot avoid.

Audio is treated more seriously

Recording conversations is considerably more intrusive than video and is harder to justify. Most guidance suggests disabling audio unless there is a specific reason for it.

Put up a sign saying recording is taking place, which is both a legal expectation in many cases and a deterrent.

Placement

Cover approaches and entry points rather than the whole garden. Mount high enough to be out of reach and low enough to capture a recognisable face — around two and a half metres is the usual compromise.

Avoid pointing at bright light or directly at the sun, which silhouettes everyone.

Storage

Local storage on a card keeps footage in your house and can be stolen with the camera. Cloud storage survives that and usually needs a subscription and trusts a provider.

Check what the subscription costs and how long footage is retained, since a week is common and a crime may be discovered later.

Doorbell cameras specifically

These capture the street and anyone passing, which is where most complaints and disputes arise. Angle downwards, use privacy masking on areas beyond your property and turn audio recording off unless you need it.

Talk to neighbours before installing rather than afterwards, which prevents almost all of the friction.

Night vision

Infrared illumination produces black and white images and reflects off glass, so a camera behind a window at night mostly photographs its own reflection. Mount outdoor cameras outside.

Power and connection

Battery cameras are easy to place and need charging every few months, more often in cold weather or with heavy motion. Wired cameras never stop and need a cable route planned.

Wi-fi at the edge of a property is frequently the weak point, so test the signal where the camera will actually go.

Account security

Use a unique strong password with two-factor authentication, and keep firmware updated. Compromised camera accounts are common and the consequence is strangers watching inside your home.

Never place cameras in bathrooms or bedrooms, and tell guests and cleaners what is recording.
