Preparing for IELTS: What Actually Moves Your Band Score
Academic or General, timed practice, and the sections people neglect
IELTS preparation goes wrong in a predictable way. People study English generally, sit the test, and score below expectation — not because their English is weak but because the test has a specific format, timing and marking scheme that general study does not address.
Pick the right module first
Academic is required for university admission and most professional registration. General Training is for immigration and work visa routes in several countries. They differ in the Reading and Writing sections.
Preparing for the wrong module is a costly and surprisingly common mistake. Confirm which one your institution or immigration route requires before you buy any materials.
Sit a full timed paper before studying
This is the highest-value first step. A complete test under exam conditions — correct timing, no pauses, no dictionary — tells you which section is actually holding your score down.
It is frequently not the section people expect. Many strong speakers lose marks in Writing Task 1, which is a specific technical task rather than a test of fluency, and which improves rapidly once you learn its conventions.
Timing is a skill in itself
Reading gives you sixty minutes for three passages and forty questions, including transferring answers. Candidates routinely run out of time not through weak comprehension but through reading every word.
Learn to skim for structure, then scan for specific information. Practise with a clock from the start, because timing pressure changes performance substantially and cannot be simulated by untimed practice.
Understand the band descriptors
Writing and Speaking are marked against published criteria covering task achievement, coherence, vocabulary range and grammatical accuracy. These descriptors are publicly available and reading them tells you precisely what examiners reward.
Most candidates never read them, which means they are optimising blind. An hour spent on the descriptors is worth more than several hours of untargeted practice.
Know how long your score lasts
IELTS results are typically accepted for two years, though individual institutions set their own policies. Sitting the test too early relative to an application deadline means paying to sit it again, which is an expensive administrative mistake.
Check the specific requirement of your institution, including whether they require a minimum in each individual section rather than only an overall band. Many do, and an uneven profile can fail a requirement despite a strong average.
On the day
Arrive early with correct identification matching the booking exactly. In Listening, answers are played once with no repeats, so a missed question should be abandoned immediately rather than dwelt on while the next three pass.
Speaking practice needs a voice
Record yourself answering practice questions and listen back. It is uncomfortable and it reveals hesitation, repetition and limited vocabulary range far more effectively than self-assessment does.
Practise with a person where possible. The test is a conversation, and rehearsing alone does not prepare you for responding to an unexpected follow-up question.
