Body Composition Scales: What They Measure

How bioimpedance works, accuracy, using the numbers sensibly and when to be careful

Scales reporting body fat, muscle and water use a technique with real limitations, and understanding them is what makes the numbers useful rather than misleading.

How bioimpedance works

A tiny current passes through the body, and the resistance it meets is used to estimate composition. Fat, muscle and water conduct differently, and the device applies an equation to the result.

That equation is the weak point. It is derived from population data, and how closely it fits any individual varies.

Accuracy

Absolute body fat percentage from a consumer scale can differ meaningfully from a clinical measurement such as a DEXA scan. Trends over weeks are far more reliable than any single reading.

Hydration, food, alcohol, exercise, menstrual cycle and skin temperature all shift the result. Readings taken at different times of day are not comparable.

Measure consistently

Same time of day, ideally first thing after using the bathroom and before eating or drinking, with bare dry feet. Weekly rather than daily.

Who should not use one

Devices generally advise against use with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device. Anyone pregnant should follow the manufacturer's guidance.

Using the numbers sensibly

Composition changes slowly, so week-to-week movement is mostly water. Judge over months alongside how clothes fit, how training feels and what you can lift.

If tracking numbers becomes preoccupying, or food and body already feel difficult, it is worth stepping away from daily measurement and speaking to a doctor. Frequent weighing makes things worse for some people.

Other measures worth tracking

Waist circumference is a simple and well-evidenced measure of health risk, and it needs nothing more than a tape measure to check. Resting heart rate, sleep quality and what you can lift all tell you considerably more than a body fat percentage.

Blood pressure measured at home is genuinely useful and cheap to monitor, and is worth discussing with a doctor rather than a fitness app.

Accuracy claims

Devices compared against clinical methods in manufacturer studies tend to look better than in independent ones. Treat the absolute number as approximate and treat the trend over time as the informative part.

If tracking feels difficult

Preoccupation with numbers, guilt after eating, or feeling out of control around food are worth discussing with a doctor. These are common and treatable, and support is available.

Removing the scale entirely is a legitimate choice, and health improves with movement and sleep whether or not anything is being measured at all.

What matters more

Regular movement including resistance training, adequate protein, sleep and consistency. Those are what change composition; the scale only reports on it afterwards.
