Streaming Boxes and Freeview Recorders
What a set-top box adds, recording versus streaming, aerials and storage
A separate box sits between an aerial or the internet and your television, and whether you need one depends on what your television already does and what you want to keep.
What a box adds
A smart television already streams, and its software is frequently slow and stops receiving updates years before the panel wears out. A box gives a faster interface that can be replaced cheaply without replacing the screen.
That is the main practical argument, and it matters more the older the television is.
Recording still has a purpose
A recorder with a hard drive keeps programmes indefinitely, works without internet, and is not subject to content disappearing from a catch-up service. Live pause and series recording remain genuinely useful.
Streaming-only households lose access to anything a broadcaster removes, which happens routinely.
Check the tuner
A recorder with multiple tuners can record several channels while you watch another. One tuner means one recording at a time, which is the most common source of frustration.
Aerials
Terrestrial reception depends on the aerial and the cable rather than the box. A poor picture usually means a corroded connection, a damaged cable or an aerial pointing at the wrong transmitter.
Check your postcode against the transmitter coverage before assuming the box is at fault.
Storage
Hard drive capacity in hours depends on whether recordings are standard or high definition. Delete as you go, since a full drive stops recording silently.
Connections
Use HDMI and check whether the television supports the video format the box outputs. A wired network connection is more reliable than wi-fi for streaming at higher resolutions.
Sound
Flat televisions have very little room for speakers, which is why dialogue is frequently hard to follow. A soundbar improves the experience more than any picture upgrade at the same price.
Many boxes and televisions have a dialogue or speech enhancement mode buried in the settings, which is worth finding and turning on.
Placement and heat
Leave clearance around any box, since they run warm and stacking them in a closed cabinet shortens their life. Use a surge-protected socket.
Replacing an older television
A box frequently extends the useful life of a perfectly good screen by several years, which is cheaper and considerably better environmentally than replacing the whole set because the software has aged.
Recycle old equipment at an electrical recycling point rather than putting it in household waste, where the electronics cause problems.
Before buying
Check which streaming apps are supported and whether the manufacturer still issues updates, since an abandoned box loses apps over time.
