Choosing a Bed and Mattress
Frame types, slat spacing, mattress firmness and what actually affects sleep
A bed is used for a third of every day for a decade, and the mattress matters considerably more than the frame. Most people spend the ratio the other way round.
The frame's real job
Supporting the mattress evenly and not creaking. Slat spacing matters — most mattress warranties require slats no more than around seven centimetres apart, and wider gaps cause sagging and void the warranty.
Solid wood and metal frames last longest. Upholstered frames look softer and are harder to clean and can harbour dust.
Firmness is personal, not a grade
Firmness relates to body weight and sleeping position rather than to back health in the abstract. Side sleepers generally need more give at the shoulder and hip; back and front sleepers generally need firmer support.
The old advice that a bad back needs a very firm mattress is not supported by evidence. Medium-firm performs at least as well in most studies.
Mattress types
Pocket sprung mattresses support each area independently and sleep cooler. Memory foam contours closely and retains heat. Latex is responsive and durable. Hybrids combine springs with a foam layer.
Test it properly
Lie on it for at least ten minutes in the position you actually sleep in, not perched on the edge. If you share a bed, test it together, since motion transfer and differing weights matter.
Replacing it
Most mattresses last around seven to ten years. Waking stiff, visible dipping, or sleeping better away from home are the practical signs.
Delivery and access
Measure doorways, hallway turns and the stairwell using the item's diagonal depth. Divan bases come in two halves and are easier; large upholstered frames frequently are not.
Confirm whether delivery is kerbside or into the room and whether packaging is taken away.
Bedding
A washable mattress protector and pillow protectors extend everything underneath and are far easier to launder. Wash bedding weekly at sixty degrees if anyone has a dust mite allergy.
Storage beds and headboards
Ottoman and drawer bases add useful storage and need clearance — an ottoman needs room to lift, drawers need room to pull out beside the bed.
Check whether a headboard is included in the price, since many frames and divan bases are sold without one and it is an extra.
Buying online
Order fabric or leather swatches and look at them in your own room, at different times of day, since colour is unreliable on a screen.
The rest of the room
A cool dark bedroom around sixteen to nineteen degrees, and a consistent wake time, affect sleep more than any mattress.
Use a washable protector and rotate the mattress as the manufacturer specifies.
