Long-Distance Coach Travel
Why people use it, booking, comfort on a long journey and what to carry
Coach travel is the cheapest way to cover distance and the one most affected by preparation, since you cannot get off and fix anything.
Why it works
Fares are a fraction of rail or air, luggage is usually included, and routes reach towns that trains no longer serve. Overnight services save a night's accommodation.
It is slower and less predictable in traffic, so build in a margin before anything that cannot be missed.
Booking
Prices rise as departure approaches, so book early. Check whether the seat is reserved, what the luggage allowance actually is and what changes cost, since cheap fares are frequently non-refundable.
Check where the stop is rather than the town name, since some are motorway services or edge-of-town sites with no facilities.
Comfort
A neck pillow, an eye mask and earplugs do more than anything else on an overnight journey. Dress in layers, since coaches are either too warm or too cold and rarely in between.
An aisle seat near the middle is the smoothest ride; over the rear axle is the worst.
What to carry
Water, food, a charged power bank, medication in your hand luggage rather than the hold, and headphones. Do not rely on onboard wifi or sockets working.
With children
Book seats together where the operator allows it, bring food, entertainment and something warm, and use the toilet at scheduled stops rather than relying on the onboard one.
Check whether child seats are required or permitted, since rules differ between operators and countries.
Accessibility
Most operators require assistance to be booked in advance, frequently at least 24 to 48 hours. Check step-free access, wheelchair spaces and whether a companion travels free.
Delays and connections
Coaches sit in the same traffic as everything else, so never book a connection with a tight margin. Check the operator's policy on missed connections and delays, which is usually less generous than rail.
Keep an eye on live tracking where it is offered.
Luggage
Label bags inside and out, keep valuables and documents with you, and take a photograph of anything going in the hold.
Comparing with rail and driving
Coach is cheapest, rail is fastest between cities and driving wins for several people travelling together with luggage. Compare the total door to door rather than the headline fare.
Advance rail fares booked early are frequently close to coach prices.
Safety and comfort on board
Wear the seatbelt where fitted, keep valuables with you rather than in the overhead rack, and get up and move at rest stops, since long periods seated increase the risk of blood clots.
Tell someone your arrival time.
