Choosing Glasses Frames That Actually Suit You
The cheapest upgrade to how you look in every photograph for five years
Glasses are the most-worn item most people own and the least considered. You will wear the same frames in every photograph, every meeting and every introduction for several years, which makes them a far higher-leverage purchase than another jacket — and yet most people choose them in ten minutes.
Shape is about contrast
The working principle is contrast rather than matching. Angular frames add structure to a rounder face; rounder or softer frames balance a more angular one. A frame that echoes your face shape exactly tends to exaggerate it, which is the opposite of what most people want.
The second rule is proportion. The frame should be roughly as wide as the widest part of your face, and the top of the frame should sit near your brow line rather than cutting across it. Eyes should sit near the horizontal centre of the lens, not high in it.
The measurements that matter
Frames carry three numbers, usually printed inside an arm: lens width, bridge width and temple length. If you already own glasses that fit well, those three numbers are the most useful information you have when buying online. Bridge width in particular decides whether frames slide down your nose all day.
You will also need your pupillary distance for prescription lenses. Any optician will measure it in under a minute, and you are entitled to ask for it as part of your prescription.
Material trade-offs
Acetate is thicker, warmer in colour and easier to adjust when heated. Metal is thinner, lighter and better for a minimal look, though it bends more easily. Titanium costs more and is worth it for anyone who has broken frames before — it is remarkably difficult to damage permanently.
Lens coatings are not upsells
Anti-reflective coating is the one genuinely worth paying for. It removes the glare that makes eyes invisible in photographs and reduces halos around headlights at night, which is a real safety benefit for anyone driving in the dark.
Scratch-resistant coating is standard on most modern lenses. Blue-light filtering is widely sold and weakly evidenced, so treat it as optional rather than essential.
Buy two pairs
This is not a luxury. If glasses are how you see, one pair means you are a single accident away from not being able to drive or work. A cheaper second pair with the same prescription removes that risk entirely, and the second pair costs far less than the first.
Try shapes in person if you can, even if you order online afterwards. Product photographs cannot tell you how a bridge sits on your nose.
