Buying Design Furniture and Lighting

Licensed and unlicensed reproductions, materials, lighting basics and delivery

Design classics are sold at wildly different prices, and the difference is usually licensing rather than quality alone. Knowing the distinction is worth doing before spending.

Licensed and unlicensed

Licensed pieces are made by the manufacturer holding the rights, to the original specification, and carry documentation. Unlicensed reproductions copy the shape, frequently with different materials and dimensions.

Design rights vary by country and the law has tightened in several. Buying an unlicensed copy may be lawful where you are and may not, and it carries no resale value.

What you are paying for

In licensed pieces, the specified materials, the correct proportions, a warranty and the maker's mark. Reproductions frequently differ in seat height, foam density and the metal used, which changes both comfort and durability.

Lighting basics

Colour temperature matters more than brightness for how a room feels. Warm light around 2700K suits living spaces; anything above 4000K reads as clinical.

A colour rendering index above 90 makes colours and skin look natural. Keep colour temperature consistent within a room, since mixing is why lighting frequently looks wrong.

Several light sources at different heights do more than one bright ceiling fitting.

Dimming

Check the fitting and the bulb are dimmable and that the dimmer is compatible with LED, since an old dimmer designed for filament bulbs causes flicker and buzzing.

Delivery and assembly

Measure the route into the room using the item's diagonal depth. Confirm whether delivery is kerbside or into the room, and whether packaging is taken away.

Lead times on made-to-order upholstery routinely run to eight to twelve weeks.

Measuring before ordering

Mark the footprint on the floor with tape and live with it for a day. Furniture is consistently larger in reality than it appears in a styled photograph.

Check ceiling height for pendant lighting and the drop from the fitting, since a pendant hung too low over a table is the usual mistake.

Electrical work

Installing new fittings, adding sockets or altering circuits is notifiable work in many jurisdictions and should be carried out by a registered electrician who can certify it.

Bulbs and fittings

Check the fitting type and the maximum wattage before buying bulbs, and note that many modern fittings have integrated LEDs that cannot be replaced, which limits the life of the whole fitting.

Buy several bulbs of the same type at once and colour temperature, so a room stays consistent as they fail.

Buying second-hand

Authentic vintage pieces hold value and frequently cost less than new reproductions. Check for maker's marks and ask about restoration.
