Matching Foundation and Base Makeup
Undertone and depth, testing properly, coverage and finish, and application
Foundation is the hardest cosmetic to buy and the mismatch is almost always about undertone rather than how light or dark the shade is.
Depth and undertone are separate
Depth is how light or dark. Undertone is the colour beneath — cool with pink or blue, warm with yellow or golden, neutral between the two. Two shades at the same depth can look completely different on skin.
A rough guide is how you look in silver against gold jewellery, and whether you burn or tan readily. Neither is definitive, which is why testing matters.
Testing properly
On the jawline, blending into the neck, in daylight rather than shop lighting. The correct shade disappears. Testing on the back of the hand is the standard mistake, since hands are a different colour from faces.
Let it sit for ten minutes, since many foundations oxidise and darken slightly after application.
Seasonal change
Most people need two shades across the year, or a lighter one mixed with a drop of a darker liquid bronzer in summer.
Coverage and finish
Sheer to full describes how much it conceals. Matte suits oily skin and emphasises texture and dry patches; dewy and satin suit dry skin and can look shiny on oily skin.
Full coverage is not better coverage. Concealer where it is needed over a lighter base usually looks more natural.
Skin preparation
Foundation sits on skin, so it shows whatever is underneath. Moisturiser absorbed properly, and sunscreen underneath as the last skincare step, do more than any primer.
Application
A damp sponge sheers it out; a brush builds coverage; fingers warm it and suit sheer formulas. Build in thin layers from the centre outwards.
Concealer
Under-eye concealer should be a shade lighter than your foundation and in a peach or orange-toned base for darkness, since that neutralises blue. For blemishes, match the foundation shade exactly.
Use a small amount and build, since heavy concealer settles into fine lines.
Setting and longevity
A light dusting of powder only where you get shiny keeps skin looking like skin. Setting the whole face flattens it.
Tools
A damp sponge, a dense buffing brush and clean fingers cover almost everything. Expensive brush sets mostly sit unused, and the two or three you reach for are what matter.
Replace sponges every few months, since they degrade and hold bacteria.
Skin type and formula
Oily skin generally suits oil-free and matte formulas; dry skin suits hydrating and satin ones. Combination skin frequently needs different products in different areas rather than one compromise.
Check for non-comedogenic labelling if you are acne-prone, treating it as a guide rather than a guarantee.
Hygiene
Wash brushes and sponges weekly, replace sponges regularly and check the open-jar symbol.
