How Comparison Websites Work
Where the money comes from, what is not shown, reading the results and using them well
Comparison sites save a great deal of time and are businesses with their own incentives, which is worth understanding before treating the top result as the best.
Where the money comes from
Some sites are paid when a visitor completes a purchase; others also charge providers for a listing. That is a legitimate model and it means the site's interest is in a sale rather than in the cheapest outcome for you.
Regulators in the UK and EU require commercial relationships and the basis of any ranking to be made clear. Look for that statement.
What is not shown
No comparison site covers the whole market. Several large providers deliberately sell direct only, so checking one or two of those separately is worth the extra ten minutes.
Results may be sorted by commercial arrangements, popularity or price; the default ordering may not put the cheapest option first.
Reading the results
Compare what is actually covered rather than the premium. In insurance, the excess, the exclusions and the single-item limits change the price far more than the brand does.
Two quotes at very different prices are usually two different products.
Your details
Answer honestly, since a quote based on wrong information is worthless and misrepresentation can void a policy. Check what the site does with your data and whether you are opting into marketing.
Insurance specifically
Cheapest is rarely the point. Compare the excess, what is excluded, the single-item limits and whether cover away from home is included, since those determine what actually happens at a claim.
Auto-renewal quotes are frequently higher than new-customer prices, so run the comparison every year.
Energy and broadband
Check exit fees on an existing contract before switching, and whether an advertised price is for a fixed term. Standing charges matter as much as unit rates for low users.
Renewals
Diarise the renewal date for every recurring product — insurance, energy, broadband, mobile — and check the market a few weeks before. Auto-renewal is where most people quietly overpay.
Existing customers can usually negotiate, and mentioning a specific competing quote works better than asking generally.
Your data
Comparison sites collect a great deal. Check the marketing consent boxes and use a separate email address if you prefer.
Reading a quote
Check the term, what happens at the end, any exit fee and whether the price is guaranteed. A cheap headline with a short fixed period is a different product from a slightly higher fixed price for longer.
Print or save the quote, since prices change daily.
Using them well
Run the comparison, then go direct to the two or three best providers and check whether buying direct is cheaper.
This is general information rather than financial advice.
