Bed-in-a-Box Mattresses: What to Expect
How they are compressed, expansion and off-gassing, the trial and disposal
Compressed mattresses shipped in a box solved the delivery problem for online mattress sellers, and the first few days with one behave differently from a conventional delivery.
How compression works
Foam and pocket-spring mattresses are compressed under high pressure, rolled and vacuum sealed. Modern foams tolerate this well, and the process is why a large mattress can be carried up a staircase by one person.
That handling advantage is the main practical reason to choose one.
Expansion
Most expand to usable within a few hours and reach full height over 24 to 72 hours. Unbox it in the room it will live in, since it cannot be moved easily afterwards.
Open the plastic carefully with the mattress already on the base, and let it expand away from walls and furniture.
Off-gassing
New foam releases a smell for a few days as trapped compounds dissipate. It is normal and generally harmless, and the room should be well ventilated while it clears.
Anyone with asthma or chemical sensitivity should air it in a spare room for several days before sleeping on it.
The trial period
Most sellers offer a sleep trial and specify a minimum period before a return, because adaptation takes two to four weeks. Give it the full minimum rather than judging in the first week.
Check who collects it, whether collection is free, and whether a protector is required for the trial to remain valid.
Firmness
Side sleepers generally need more give at the shoulder and hip; back and front sleepers firmer. Heavier people sink further into the same mattress and usually need firmer.
Bases and warranties
Check what base the warranty requires, since slats more than about seven centimetres apart cause sagging and void most mattress warranties. A sprung slat base changes the feel noticeably.
Keep the label and the receipt, since a warranty claim depends on both.
Care
Rotate as the manufacturer specifies, usually every few months, and check whether the mattress is single sided, since many modern ones should not be flipped.
Getting rid of the packaging
The plastic wrap is usually not kerbside recyclable and needs taking to a soft plastics collection. Keep the box flat until the trial period has passed, since a return frequently needs it.
Take photographs of the label and any serial number before the packaging goes.
Disposal of the old one
Mattresses are increasingly refused by kerbside collections. Ask whether the retailer removes the old one, and note that charities cannot accept mattresses without fire labels.
Use a washable protector from the first night.
