How to Buy a Gift for Someone You Barely Know
Secret santa, office exchanges and the categories that reliably work
Every December produces the same problem: buying a present for a colleague whose interests you could not name, under a fixed budget, to be opened in front of everyone. It is a specific challenge with specific solutions, and enthusiasm is not one of them.
The categories that work
Consumables are the safest. Good coffee, decent chocolate, interesting snacks — they get used, they do not require storage, and nobody has to display them out of politeness. This is the single most reliable category for a near-stranger.
Desk objects are the second. Something small and well made that sits by a keyboard. The constraint is that it must be genuinely useful or genuinely pleasant to look at, because a desk gadget that is neither becomes clutter within a week.
Games and puzzles work for a group setting, since they can be opened and immediately shared, which is exactly what an office exchange is for.
What to avoid
Anything sized — clothing, jewellery, gloves. Anything about appearance, including fragrance and grooming products, which implies a judgement you are not close enough to make. Anything requiring storage space in someone's home. And joke gifts referencing something you are not certain the person finds funny.
Hitting the budget properly
Spend close to the stated limit rather than under it. A visibly cheap gift in a group exchange is more awkward than a slightly generous one, and the limit exists to make everyone comfortable rather than to be undercut.
Do not go significantly over either. It creates an obligation the recipient did not agree to.
Presentation matters more than the gift
Genuine wrapping, a real gift bag and a written card raise the perceived value of an identical item considerably. This costs very little and is the highest-return effort in the whole exercise.
Check delivery dates, not shipping speeds
Retailers quote dispatch time and transit time separately, and the two must be added together. An item that ships in three days with two-day delivery arrives in five, which is a different thing from what the banner appears to promise.
In December both numbers extend, and cut-off dates for guaranteed arrival are published well in advance. Find that date before ordering rather than after.
Group gifts work better
If several people are buying for the same person, pooling budgets produces one good present instead of four mediocre ones. It requires one person to organise it, which is the only reason it does not happen more often.
Order in November
December delivery becomes unreliable and expensive very quickly, and the good options in every gift category sell out first. Ordering early is the difference between choosing something and taking whatever still ships.
Include a gift receipt in the box but outside the wrapping. It makes exchanging easy without making the gift feel provisional.
