Photo Gifts and Crystal Engraving
Choosing the photograph, what engraving can reproduce, lighting and personalising well
Photographs turned into objects succeed or fail on the source image, and laser engraving in particular has specific requirements that a phone snapshot frequently does not meet.
The photograph decides everything
Use the highest resolution original rather than a screenshot or something forwarded through a messaging app, which compresses heavily. Send the original file.
Engraving works by etching points inside the crystal, which reproduces contrast and shape rather than colour. Strong, even lighting on the face and a clean background give the best result.
What does not work
Busy backgrounds, several people small in the frame, heavy shadows across a face, and anything taken at a distance. Group photographs generally need cropping to one or two faces.
Very dark or very bright images lose detail, since the process has a limited tonal range.
Lighting the finished piece
Crystal engraving only shows properly with light through it. A light base is not an accessory but a requirement, and placing it against a dark background makes the image read.
Other photo gifts
Printed books, framed prints and canvases each have their own requirements. Check the minimum resolution stated, and remember that an image looking sharp on a phone may not enlarge well.
Ask for a digital proof and look carefully at the faces, which is where these succeed or fail.
Memorial pieces
These are frequently made from the only photograph that exists. Say so when ordering, since a good supplier will work carefully with a poor image rather than rejecting it.
Backing up the originals
Keep three copies of important photographs, on two types of media, with one stored elsewhere. Photographs are the household files people most regret losing, and a single phone or a single drive is not a backup at all.
Label digital files with the names, dates and places while there is still someone who remembers them.
As a gift
Ask the recipient's family which photograph they would choose, since different people hold very different images of the same person or the same moment.
Framing and display
Keep prints and photographs out of direct sunlight, which fades them permanently, and use ultraviolet-filtering glazing for anything valuable. Acidic mounts and backing boards yellow prints over the years.
Standard frame sizes cost a fraction of custom framing, so order a size you can buy a frame for off the shelf.
Practical
Allow production time on top of delivery, and check every name and date on the proof, since personalised items are not returnable.
Keep crystal out of direct sunlight, since it can focus light and is a genuine fire risk.
