Leggings and Activewear Fabric
The squat test, fabric and compression, waistbands and washing
Leggings are judged on two things — whether they go sheer and whether they stay up — and both come down to the fabric and the waistband.
The squat test
Squat in front of a mirror in good light before removing the tags. Thin knit and light colours show through under stretch, and no amount of quality elsewhere fixes it.
Fabric weight and knit density matter more than price. A heavier knit is more opaque, more supportive and warmer.
Fabric
Nylon and elastane blends are soft, durable and hold shape. Polyester blends wick well and hold odour more. Higher elastane gives more stretch and degrades faster, particularly with heat and chlorine.
Brushed and buttery finishes feel excellent and pill where thighs rub, which is worth knowing before spending a lot.
Waistbands
A wide, high waistband with a bonded or encased elastic stays put. A thin folded-over band rolls down, which is the single most common complaint.
Check whether there is a drawcord and a pocket, since a phone in a side pocket pulls a waistband down when running.
Compression and support
True compression garments are a different product from tight leggings, and evidence for performance benefits is mixed. Comfort and feeling supported are reasonable reasons to prefer them.
Sizing
Work from the stated measurements rather than the size label, and check the inseam length, since a legging designed for someone taller will bag at the ankle.
Most brands run small in activewear, and squeezing into a smaller size is what makes fabric go sheer.
Sports bras
Support matters more than the leggings for anyone who needs one, and the right level depends on the activity rather than the size.
Longevity
Elastane degrades with heat, chlorine, sun and time, so leggings sag long before they look worn. Rotating between pairs and washing cool extends that considerably.
Replace when the waistband no longer recovers, which is the point at which nothing else helps.
Buying
Buy one pair before committing to several, since fit is the whole product here.
Pockets and details
A phone pocket that actually holds a phone without dragging the waistband, flatlock seams that do not rub, and a gusset that reduces seam pressure. Those three decide whether a pair gets worn.
Check the seams are flat rather than raised if you run.
Check the returns policy, since activewear is frequently non-returnable once worn.
Washing
Cool, inside out, no fabric softener, which clogs technical fibres, and never tumble dry, since heat destroys elastane.
Wash after every session and rinse chlorine out immediately.
